Chapter 23 - The Crimson Ultrasound

Mara lowered the weapon two inches, but her finger stayed curled around the trigger guard. "Turn around. Hands on the tunnel wall."
Eric Cruz obeyed without hesitation, leaning his palms against the damp brick while Mara patted him down with ruthless efficiency. No weapons. Just sterile medical instruments, combat bandages, IV fluids, and a portable, battery-powered diagnostic tablet.
"He's clean," Mara muttered, pulling him toward the alcove where Clara lay shivering against the rusted iron wheels of the coal car.
Cruz immediately dropped to his knees in the mud, throwing off his coat to wrap it around Clara’s trembling shoulders. He pulled out a pair of nitrile gloves and snapped them on, his eyes focused and calm despite the screech of metal echoing from the breached blast door behind them.
"How far apart are the spasms, Clara?" Cruz asked softly, clicking on a penlight to check her pupillary response.
"Three... three minutes," Clara gasped, her face drained of all color. "It burns... like fire across my spine."
"We need to check the baby’s heart tones right now," Cruz said. He reached into his kit and pulled out a pocket Doppler wand, coating the sensor with cold gel before lifting Clara's blood-flecked cashmere sweater.
The moment the wand touched her skin, the tiny speaker crackled with static—and then, a rapid, galloping thrum echoed through the dripping tunnel.
*Thump-thump-thump-thump.*
"Fetal heart rate is elevated—one hundred and seventy," Cruz said, his brow furrowing as he moved the wand across her lower right quadrant. "Wait. Look at this."
He turned the tablet screen toward Mara.
Instead of a standard fetal ultrasound silhouette, the high-resolution Doppler displayed something entirely irregular. Around the perimeter of the amniotic sac, glowing faint green in the enhanced contrast view, was a web of micro-vascular calcifications arranged in a terrifyingly geometric pattern.
Mara’s breath hitched in her throat. "What is that?"
"That isn't natural tissue," Cruz whispered, his voice trembling for the first time. "It’s a bio-synthetic synthetic matrix. A cellular binding cage. Miss Bennett... this child wasn't just conceived. It was engineered."
Clara’s eyes went wide with pure horror. She reached down, her shaking fingers hovering over the screen. "What are you talking about? David... David gave me vitamins every day during the first trimester. He said they were special fertility supplements imported from Switzerland..."
"The Voss Bio-Genesis Initiative," Mara snarled, the realization striking her like a physical blow. She slammed her hand against the titanium briefcase strapped to her chest. "The ledger isn't just financial records. It’s a human patent registry. Eleanor Voss didn't just traffic children... she was breeding them."
Before Cruz could answer, a concussive blast blew the distant blast door entirely off its hinges. Shrapnel clattered against the tunnel walls. Heavy tactical boots splashed into the water, advancing with lethal, coordinated speed.
"They're in," Mara said, chambering a round. "Can she walk?"
May you like
"No," Cruz said grimly, packing his kit. "Her cervix is fully effaced. If we move her too fast, she’ll deliver right on these tracks. We need an operating room. Now."
"There’s an abandoned sub-basement under the old St. Jude’s Children's Asylum two hundred yards north," Mara said, her voice hard as steel. "We hold out there. Or we die there."
