Chapter 10 - Justice in the Daylight

Clara didn't think about the mercenary behind her. She didn't think about the bullet that could end her life. She saw only her baby girl’s face, and in that split second, she became an unstoppable force of nature.

Clara drove her body forward, grabbing the mercenary’s knee and wrenching it sideways with a sickening *POP*. The guard collapsed with a howl of agony, his shot going wild into the ceiling.

At the exact same instant, Harrison moved.

He didn't dive for his gun. He lunged straight for Evelyn’s extended arm.

*BANG!*

The shot detonated deafeningly. The bullet grazed Harrison’s left shoulder, tearing through his flesh, but the momentum of his body slammed into Evelyn with the force of a freight train.

They crashed violently into the grand staircase banister. Harrison’s hands locked around Evelyn’s wrist, twisting with brutal, bone-snapping force.

*CRACK.*

Evelyn shrieked in agony as her wrist fractured. The Glock slipped from her limp fingers, tumbling down the marble stairs.

Harrison ripped Lily from Evelyn’s grasp, spinning around and hurling himself backward down the steps, curling his entire body into a protective cocoon around his daughter as they tumbled down to the landing.

He absorbed the entire impact with his spine and shoulders, shielding Lily completely.

The toddler let out a loud, healthy wail of fright, but she was untouched. Not a scratch. Not a single drop of blood.

“Lily!” Clara scrambled across the marble on her knees, throwing her arms around both of them, sobbing uncontrollably as she buried her face in Lily’s soft hair. “My baby! My sweet baby!”

On the upper landing, Evelyn groaned, clutching her broken wrist, dragging herself toward the terrace. “Julian... Julian, help me...”

She crawled out onto the rain-swept terrace.

Suddenly, a blinding beam of light illuminated the entire night sky.

*THWIP-THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!*

Two Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters materialized from the storm clouds above the estate’s lawn, their powerful searchlights pinning Evelyn and the fleeing Julian Vance in blinding, daylight-level illumination.

Dozens of laser sights painted both of them in crimson dots.

Through megaphones that drowned out the thunder, a voice boomed:

*“FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! DROP TO THE GROUND! HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD! YOU ARE COMPLETELY SURROUNDED!”*

Across the lawn, a battered, bleeding Marcus was standing beside the main gate controls, having successfully overridden the perimeter security to admit forty heavily armed federal tactical officers who were now swarming the grounds like an army of vengeance.

Julian Vance slowly dropped his briefcase into the wet grass and raised his hands into the rain, his empire collapsing around him in a matter of seconds.

Evelyn collapsed face-first onto the wet stone, sobbing hysterically as zip-ties were violently clamped around her wrists.

Inside the rotunda, the storm raged outside, but inside, the suffocating nightmare was finally over.

Harrison sat propped against the base of the staircase, his shoulder bleeding, his body exhausted from the poison, but his eyes clear, alive, and filled with tears he had refused to shed for years.

He looked at Clara, who was rocking Lily gently in her arms. The baby’s sobs were slowing into soft, hiccuping sighs of safety.

Harrison reached out his trembling, bloodstained hand.

Slowly, hesitantly, he rested it against Clara’s knee.

“Clara...” Harrison’s voice broke into a raw, ragged whisper. “I don't expect you to ever forgive me. What I did to you... the cruelty... the blindness... there is no court, no apology, no amount of money in the world that can ever wash that away.”

Clara looked down at him. The fire in her eyes hadn't completely died, but the bitterness had softened into something deeper, tempered by survival and the shared love for the little girl resting between them.

“You’re right, Harrison,” Clara said softly, wiping a tear from her cheek with the back of her sleeve. “You don't get forgiveness today. But our daughter needs a father. A real father. Not a billionaire chasing ghosts, but a man who protects her.”

Lily leaned over Clara’s arm. Her tiny hand reached out and gently patted Harrison’s bloody shoulder.

“Dada okay?” Lily asked, her blue eyes shining with innocent, unconditional grace.

A broken sob tore from Harrison’s chest. He bowed his head, resting his forehead against Lily’s tiny knee, weeping openly for the first time in his adult life.

“Dada is okay, Lily-bug,” Harrison choked out, reaching up to gently enclose her tiny hand in his. “Dada is finally awake.”

In Harrison’s open palm, illuminated by the flashing blue and red emergency lights of the arriving police cruisers, sat the silver USB drive. The crimson serpent seal gleamed brightly.

The secret that had almost destroyed their family was now the key that had set them free.
