Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Wine

In the suffocating pitch-black of the library, chaos erupted within a fraction of a second.
Lily let out a shrill scream of terror. Clara dropped to her knees, throwing her entire body over her daughter, tucking Lily beneath her chest against the cold carpet.
*“Harrison!”* Clara cried out through the dark.
“I’m here! Don’t move!” Harrison shouted.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the vicinity of the obsidian desk, followed immediately by the sickening sound of flesh impacting bone. Marcus let out a sharp grunt of pain.
“Security breach!” Marcus roared, his voice strained. “She had a ceramic shiv in her sleeve! She went for the emergency override!”
A crimson emergency strobe activated on the library ceiling, painting the room in horrific, pulsing pulses of blood-red light.
Evelyn was no longer on the floor. She had struck Marcus across the temple with an antique brass paperweight snatched from the desk in the dark. Marcus was staggering, blood streaming down the side of his face, his vision swimming. Evelyn had already punched a sequence into the wall panel beside the private terrace exit—a mechanical fail-safe that bypassed the central system when main power was severed.
The reinforced steel door hissed open, admitting the howling wind of an approaching thunderstorm and the distant, rapid staccato of gunfire from the lower gardens.
“Did you really think Julian would let me operate without backup, Harry?” Evelyn laughed, her silhouette illuminated by the flashing red strobe. The wind tore her blonde hair into wild ribbons. In her right hand, she held a compact Glock 43—retrieved from the hidden magnetic lockbox Arthur had built beneath the terrace mantle decades ago.
She leveled the barrel directly at Harrison’s chest.
“Step away from the terminal, darling,” Evelyn commanded, her finger hovering over the trigger. “The red flash drive. Eject it and throw it to me. Now.”
Harrison didn't flinch. He stood tall in front of the monitors, the pulse of the red emergency light carving deep shadows across his hollow cheeks. But beneath his defiant posture, a terrifying physiological reaction was taking place.
His vision was blurring at the edges. A cold, oily sweat broke out across his forehead. His heart fluttered erratically, skipping beats, then racing at an unnatural, chaotic speed.
*The wine.*
Two hours before Lily’s chase, when Harrison had arrived home from the corporate office, Evelyn had handed him his customary glass of vintage Pinot Noir in his private study. She had smiled, kissed his cheek, and told him he looked stressed.
*Phase Two,* Julian Vance’s recorded voice echoed in Harrison’s mind. *Harrison’s fatal overdose.*
“You poisoned me,” Harrison said, his voice straining against a sudden, crushing constriction in his chest. He clutched his left arm, his breath coming in shallow gasps. “Today. The wine.”
Evelyn’s smile was demonic in the crimson strobe. “Aconite, Harry. Pure, synthetic wolfsbane extract. Tasteless, odorless, completely undetectable in a routine coronary screen. It takes about two hours to paralyze the cardiovascular nervous system. You have maybe thirty minutes before your heart fibrillates and snaps like a dry twig.”
“You sick, twisted monster!” Clara screamed, rising from behind the armchair, keeping Lily tucked securely behind her back. “Give him the antidote!”
“There is no antidote for you, Clara,” Evelyn sneered, shifting the barrel toward Clara’s forehead. “Vance’s tactical team just breached the south gate. By the time they finish clearing Harrison’s private security, the narrative will be written. A tragic murder-suicide: Clara Sterling, consumed by psychotic jealousy, broke into the mansion, poisoned Harrison, shot Evelyn, and burned the house down with the baby inside. A total tragedy. Vance acquires Sterling Bio-Pharma through the secondary holding company, and I walk away with three hundred million in bearer bonds.”
Lily peeked out from behind Clara’s leg, her tiny hand clutching Clara’s denim jeans. “Mama...” she whimpered.
Evelyn’s finger tightened on the trigger. “Goodbye, Clara.”
Before Evelyn could fire, a massive, bleeding figure lunged from the shadows.
Marcus, running on pure adrenaline and military grit despite the blood pouring into his eyes, tackled Evelyn at the waist.
*BANG!*
The gunshot detonated inside the library like a cannon shot. The bullet ripped through the leather upholstery of the armchair Clara had occupied seconds earlier.
Marcus and Evelyn crashed against the obsidian desk. Evelyn shrieked, kicking wildly with her designer heels, driving the broken stiletto into Marcus’s shoulder. Marcus grunted in agony, but his massive hands locked around her wrist, violently slamming her forearm against the stone edge until the Glock clattered to the floor.
“RUN!” Marcus roared, blood spraying from his lips as Evelyn raked her manicured nails across his eyes. “Mr. Sterling, take your family and get to the panic vault! The south garden is compromised! GO!”
Harrison didn't hesitate. Pushing past the agonizing, icy pain radiating down his left arm, he snatched the silver flash drive from the terminal, grabbed Clara’s hand with his right, and shoved her toward the north corridor exit.
“Hold Lily!” Harrison gasped, his skin turning a ghostly, bluish gray under the emergency lights. “I’ll get us to the vault!”

They burst through the heavy interior doors into the north wing corridor just as a burst of automatic gunfire shattered the glass of the terrace behind them.
