Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Viper

The rain had intensified into a torrential downpour, rattling against the floor-to-ceiling glass of Sterling Tower’s 80th-floor boardroom. It was 3:00 AM, yet twelve men and women in tailored suits sat around the obsidian conference table, their expressions carved from stone.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, Harrison’s godfather and the vice-chairman of Sterling Global. He adjusted his gold cufflinks, looking down at his phone with an irritated twitch of his jaw.
"Harrison is incapacitated," Vance announced, his voice smooth as aged whiskey. "Elena’s... unfortunate emotional breakdown at the penthouse has created a PR catastrophe. Stock is down twenty-two percent in pre-market trading. Under bylaws Section 9, we must declare the CEO mentally and physically unfit, transferring operational authority immediately."
"To whom, Arthur?" a board member asked nervously.
"To me," Vance said, leaning forward. "Before the federal investigators freeze our liquid reserves."
The boardroom doors blasted inward.
The heavy mahogany doors slammed against the wall with the force of an explosion. Harrison Sterling stepped into the room, leaning heavily on a tactical cane, his hospital band still clinging to his wrist beneath the sleeve of an overcoat. Flanking him were four federal marshals with carbines held at low ready. And behind them walked Clara, holding Lily safely wrapped in a rain blanket.
The board members gasped, several leaping to their feet.
"You look disappointed, Arthur," Harrison said, his voice a low, thunderous growl that silenced the entire room. "Were you expecting a call from the morgue?"
Arthur Vance didn't flinch. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth. "Harrison. You should be in bed. You’re delirious. Bringing Clara and the bastard child into this sacred room... have you lost your mind entirely?"
Harrison walked toward the table, each strike of his cane echoing like a death knell on the hardwood. He stopped directly across from Vance, leaned his weight onto his hands, and stared into his godfather’s eyes.
"Lily is my daughter," Harrison said, each syllable laced with venom. "And on that USB my daughter brought me, Arthur, there isn't just Elena's confessions. There is the wire transfer route that funded Elena's entire life for three years. Every dollar came from your private shell entity in the Caymans."
Vance’s smile finally vanished. "You think you can prove that, boy?"
"I don't need to prove it to the board," Clara interjected, stepping forward and laying the silver USB on the table with a crisp click. "I already uploaded the unencrypted ledgers to the Treasury Department’s international sanctions unit fifteen minutes ago. Your accounts are seized, Arthur. The raid on your Hamptons estate started six minutes ago."
Vance’s phone began buzzing uncontrollably on the table. The screen lit up with one frantic alert after another.
The old man looked down at the vibrating phone, then back up at Harrison. His eyes flashed with a cold, aristocratic rage. "You think you’ve won, Harrison? You think Elena and I were the apex? We were the leash, you fool. We kept them from burning your precious child to ash. Now that you’ve broken the leash..."
Vance reached swiftly into his breast pocket.
"Federal marshals! Don't move!" a marshal screamed, raising his weapon.

Vance pulled out not a gun, but a small remote detonator. He pressed the crimson button with a gleeful, maniacal sneer. "Look out the window, Harrison."
