Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Room 404

The private suite at the Georgian Terrace Hotel smelled of stale bourbon and rain. Dr. Harrison Ross sat in a leather armchair, his breathing ragged, his hand shaking so violently that the ice in his glass rattled against the crystal. He was seventy-one now, frail, his skin yellowed from liver failure, looking nothing like the untouchable chief medical examiner who once controlled every autopsy in Fulton County.

Daniel stood by the panoramic window overlooking Peachtree Street. Behind him, Marcus Vance stood with his back to the locked door, arms crossed, the cold silence in the room heavier than any interrogation cell.

"I have liver cancer, Daniel," Ross rasped, coughing into a silk handkerchief. "Six months. Maybe eight. You can’t threaten me with prison. I’ll die before the grand jury convenes."

Daniel turned slowly. He walked toward the old man, his footsteps deliberate, soundless on the plush carpet. He didn't pull a weapon. He didn't raise his voice. He simply pulled a chair directly opposite Ross, sat down, and leaned forward until their faces were inches apart.

"I don't care about putting you in prison, Harrison," Daniel said softly. "I care about my son. Every night, Ethan looks at a picture of his mother on his nightstand and asks me if she felt any pain when she died. For five years, I lied to him and said she went to sleep peacefully. But she didn't die that night, did she?"

Ross closed his eyes, a tear cutting a clean path through the liver spots on his cheek. "You don't understand who you were married to, Daniel. You married into the Saint-Claire family thinking they were just old Georgia money and blue-blood charities. You didn't know about the offshore trusts. You didn't know about the syndicate."

"Who paid you to fake the autopsy?" Marcus barked from the door.

"It wasn't a payout!" Ross snapped, his eyes snapping open with sudden, hysterical intensity. "It was an extraction! The Saint-Claire estate was bleeding dry. Eleanor’s father had pledged the entire family trust to a private European hedge syndicate—men who make cartels look like boy scouts. Eleanor found out two weeks before the crash. She realized that under the trust’s bylaws, if she died without an adult heir, the entire four-hundred-million-dollar portfolio reverted directly to the creditors."

"Ethan was her heir," Daniel growled, his knuckles whitening on the armrests.

"Only if he reached twenty-one!" Ross spat. "Until then, the surviving spouse controlled the voting shares—unless the surviving spouse remarried into an approved lineage! That was the clause! That was the entire play!"

The pieces fell into place with the sickening clarity of a guillotine blade dropping.

"Victoria," Daniel whispered, the room spinning around him. "Victoria Vance wasn't an opportunistic gold digger who targeted me at a charity gala. She was sent."

"She was an operative for the syndicate," Ross confessed, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "They needed you married before Ethan’s seventh birthday. Once you were married to Victoria, her legal team had pre-signed documents to strip your conservatorship over Ethan’s trust. The fake pregnancy? It was supposed to create a new direct heir under their control! If Victoria had an infant child with your name on the birth certificate, they would have had permanent legal leverage over every dime Eleanor left behind!"

"And what about Eleanor?" Daniel demanded, grabbing Ross by the lapels of his cashmere robe, hauling the old man forward until their foreheads almost touched. "Is she alive?!"

Ross began to tremble uncontrollably, his gaze darting to the hotel room door as if expecting ghosts to kick it down. "The crash was supposed to kill her, Daniel! She knew it was coming. She swapped cars with a decoy at the perimeter... but the syndicate intercepted her before she could cross the state line. They didn't kill her. You don't kill the sole signatory to a Swiss vault containing three hundred million in bearer bonds."

"Where is she, Harrison?!"

May you like

"St. Jude’s Sanatorium," Ross gasped, choking on his own saliva. "Outside Savannah. Closed down ten years ago... privately funded now by an offshore shell company called Ironclad Gate. But Daniel... you can't go there. If they see you coming, they won't run. They'll erase her."
