Chapter 19 - The Reckoning in the Ash

The cabin was a warzone.

Julian Croft dragged himself through the shattered debris of the dining room, clutching his bleeding leg, desperately crawling toward the rear exit where an all-terrain vehicle was parked. Behind him, the sound of combat was brief, brutal, and definitive. Keller and his contractors swept through the house like a scythe, eliminating the two remaining mercenaries with terrifying precision.

Julian reached the porch door, his hand trembling as he reached for the brass knob.

A heavy boot came down on his hand, crushing his fingers against the threshold. Julian screamed, rolling onto his back.

Daniel stood over him. The wind whipped through Daniel’s rain-soaked hair. The barrel of his rifle pointed directly between Julian’s terrified, bloodshot eyes.

"Daniel! Wait! Listen to me!" Julian shrieked, raising his bloody hands in desperate surrender. "It was Victoria! She made the deal with the syndicate! I was trying to protect the Saint-Claire name! If they liquidated the trust, our family would have been destroyed!"

"You put a mannequin in my wife's grave," Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it seemed to drop the temperature of the room. "You put Eleanor in a chemical coma for five years. You sent armed men to murder my son."

"She’s alive, Daniel! She’s alive because of me!" Julian wept, tears washing through the grime on his cheeks. "I could have let them kill her in that crash! I saved her!"

"You didn't save her," a small, steady voice came from behind Daniel.

Daniel looked over his shoulder. Ethan stood in the doorway, wrapped in an emergency wool blanket, his face smudged with soot, Barnaby limping beside him, licking the boy's hand.

Julian looked at Ethan, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Ethan... Ethan, tell your dad. Tell him we’re family. I came to your baseball games! I bought you your first pony! Tell him!"

Ethan looked down at the pathetic, broken man on the floor. The memory of the St. Regis gala flashed through his eyes—the fake belly, the lies, the poison that had stalked his family for as long as he could remember.

"You're not family," Ethan said clearly. "You're just another fold."

Daniel lowered the rifle, stepping back.

From the shadows behind the porch, Detective Marcus Vance stepped forward, flanked by two armed federal marshals. The cold click of steel handcuffs snapping around Julian Croft’s wrists sounded like a final judgment.

"Julian Croft, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, federal kidnapping, and corporate fraud," Marcus declared, dragging the weeping man to his feet.

Daniel turned away. He knelt down in the broken glass and ash, pulling Ethan into an embrace so tight the boy gasped for breath.

"I've got you, buddy," Daniel choked out, burying his face in his son’s hair, tears finally spilling past his defenses. "I've got you. It’s over."

"Dad..." Ethan whispered, pulling back slightly, his hazel eyes wide and shining in the helicopter lights. "The lady in the helicopter... is it really her?"
