Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Clause

Daniel drove through the torrential downpour toward his estate in Tuxedo Park, the wipers slapping against the windshield in a frantic, rhythmic tempo. Ethan was asleep in the backseat, clutching a worn teddy bear that had once belonged to his mother.
Vanessa’s parting words rang in Daniel’s ears like the toll of a funeral bell.
*Check your father's will.*
Forty minutes later, Daniel was inside his mahogany-lined study. The grandfather clock in the corner struck 2:00 AM. On his desk sat a heavy, leather-bound binder containing the Last Will and Testament of Arthur Sterling—a ruthless patriarch who had spent his life viewing people as balance sheets and bloodlines as corporate assets.
Daniel flipped through the yellowed legal parchment until he found Section IV: *Contingencies of Succession and Trust Distribution.*
His eyes scanned the dense legal jargon, his pulse quickening with every line.
Arthur Sterling had never approved of Daniel’s marriage to Eleanor, considering her too soft, too artistic. When Eleanor died, Arthur had amended the family trust with a draconian stipulation before his own death two years later.
*Clause 12.B: The Sterling Family Trust, comprising fifty-one percent of voting shares in Sterling Capital and liquid assets totaling approximately four hundred million dollars, shall remain under the custodianship of the primary heir, Daniel Sterling, until his firstborn son, Ethan Sterling, reaches the age of nine.*
Daniel’s fingers gripped the edge of the paper so hard it tore slightly.
*Upon the occasion of Ethan Sterling's ninth birthday, full testamentary control of the Trust shall dissolve into an irrevocable split IF, and only if, the lineage remains singular. Should Daniel Sterling produce a second legitimate biological heir prior to Ethan Sterling’s ninth birthday, executive control of the entire estate remains solely with Daniel and his current spouse until both heirs achieve the age of majority.*
*HOWEVER, should no second biological heir exist by the aforementioned date, forty percent of the liquid trust shall immediately transfer into an independent trust managed exclusively by Arthur Sterling's designated alternate trustee: Julian Sterling.*
Julian.
Daniel slammed the binder shut. The crack echoed through the cavernous study like a gunshot.
Julian Sterling was Daniel’s estranged younger brother. A reckless, sociopathic gambler who had been exiled from the family firm after embezzling twelve million dollars from an offshore logistics subsidiary seven years ago. Julian had vanished to Europe, living off an annual stipend, bitter and vengeful.
Ethan’s ninth birthday was in six days.
If Vanessa had produced a living child—or even maintained the legal illusion of an imminent birth through certified medical documentation—she and Daniel would have retained unilateral control over the four-hundred-million-dollar trust. But without a second child, Julian would legally inherit one hundred and sixty million dollars in cash next Tuesday morning.
Daniel sank into his leather chair, rubbing his temples. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying precision.
Vanessa was a former high-end real estate broker whom Daniel had met at a charity auction in Monaco eighteen months ago. She was beautiful, attentive, and seemingly indifferent to his wealth. She had entered his life during his deepest bout of depression, slipping into Eleanor’s vacant space with seamless grace.
She hadn't just faked a pregnancy to secure her place as his wife.
She was working for someone who understood the exact mechanics of Arthur Sterling’s will. Someone who stood to gain hundreds of millions of dollars if the clock ran out—or someone who intended to blackmail the estate using the threat of fraud.
The study door creaked open.
Daniel looked up. Ethan stood in the doorway, rubbing his sleepy eyes, his pajamas dragging on the floor.
"Daddy?" the boy murmured. "Why was Vanessa wearing a toy tummy?"
Daniel’s chest tightened with an unbearable ache. He waved the boy forward, lifting him onto his lap.
"It wasn't a toy, buddy," Daniel said gently, smoothing Ethan’s ruffled hair. "Vanessa... Vanessa made a very bad choice. She told a lie."
Ethan leaned his head against Daniel’s chest. "I know."
Daniel froze. "What do you mean, you know?"
May you like
Ethan looked up, his large hazel eyes identical to Eleanor’s. "I heard her talking to the man in the garden two nights ago. When you were in New York."
