Chapter 10 - Dawn of Truth

The storm passed just as the first pale sliver of dawn broke over the horizon.
The Vance estate was surrounded by dozens of federal, state, and forensic vehicles. Yellow crime scene tape fluttered in the crisp morning breeze, cordoning off the grand lawn where, less than twenty-four hours earlier, the upper crust of society had sipped tea in ignorance.
Coroners were wheeling two black body bags out of the mansion—Victoria Klein, the fake heiress who had traded her soul for stolen bearer bonds, and the fallen mercenary.
Arthur Blackwood, handcuffed and shackled at both ankles, was being shoved into the back of an armored federal transport van. The media had already arrived at the perimeter gates; camera flashes erupted like lightning bugs in the gray morning mist as journalists captured the disgraced billionaire being led away in chains. The federal indictments were already rolling out across the news tickers: *Conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, federal wire fraud, and the wrongful death of Evelyn Vance.*
Harrison stood on the edge of the terrace, a thick woolen blanket draped over his shoulders, his bandaged arm held securely in a sling. Marcus walked up beside him, handing him a warm ceramic mug of black coffee.
"The federal prosecutors seized the clinic," Marcus said quietly. "Dr. Sterling gave a full confession under immunity. They recovered Evelyn’s original medical samples from a secure storage facility in New Jersey. The thallium poisoning is documented. The case against Blackwood is airtight, Mr. Vance. He will spend the rest of his natural life in ADX Florence."
Harrison nodded slowly, staring out across the garden. The heavy stone weight that had rested on his chest for two long years—the suffocating guilt that he had somehow failed Evelyn—finally began to lift, replaced by a quiet, solemn ache.
"And Maya?" Harrison asked, his voice trembling.
"The jet landed safely at the ranch in Montana," Marcus replied with a faint, rare smile. "Claire called ten minutes ago. Maya is out in the pasture feeding carrots to the horses. She asked when her daddy was coming to teach her how to ride."
A tear slipped silently down Harrison’s cheek, cutting through the soot and dried blood on his face. He wiped it away, taking a deep, clean breath of the morning air.
He walked down the stone steps, past the shattered remnants of the wisteria arbor, and out to the quiet edge of the estate where Evelyn’s private memorial rose among the weeping willows.
Harrison knelt in the wet grass before the white marble headstone. He reached out with his uninjured hand, gently brushing away a fallen wisteria petal from Evelyn’s carved name.
"It’s over, Evie," Harrison whispered into the morning breeze. "Maya is safe. The monster is gone. And our daughter saved us all."

As the morning sun crested the hills, bathing the stone in warm, golden light, Harrison turned his back on the ruins of the mansion and walked toward the waiting car that would take him to the airport.
His empire had almost been destroyed by a web of greed and silicone lies, but as he dialed the Montana ranch to hear his daughter’s laugh, Harrison Vance knew that the only thing that truly mattered had survived.
