Chapter 4 - Whispers from the Clinic

The air in the hidden room turned instantly arctic. Harrison stood frozen, holding the German-labeled vial in his trembling fingers, the file bearing his daughter’s name resting heavy in his other hand.
*Administration Date: June 14.* Tomorrow.
They weren't just plotting to steal his fortune. They were systematically eradicating his bloodline. Evelyn had been the first; Maya was meant to be the second. The fake pregnancy had been the perfect cover—a phantom child that would eventually be "lost" in a tragic miscarriage, or perhaps swapped with an adopted infant, while Victoria positioned herself as the grieving, sole heir to the Vance estate once Harrison met his own mysterious, medically induced demise.
"Marcus," Harrison spoke, his voice dropping into a deadly, chilling register. "Get Claire and Maya out of this house right now. Put them on the jet. Take them to my private compound in Montana. Private security only—men you served with in the Rangers. No local guards. No staff."
"Consider it done, Mr. Vance," Marcus replied, his jaw set like granite. "And Victoria?"
"Keep her tied to that chair. Strip the room of anything she could use to harm herself. If she breathes too loudly, sedate her."
Harrison shoved the amber vial into his inner coat pocket and tucked Maya’s file under his arm. He strode down the stairs, ignoring the manic, triumphant screams of Victoria echoing from the study as she realized her hidden sanctuary had been breached.
Twenty minutes later, Harrison’s armored Maybach tore through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, speeding toward Manhattan. His destination was the St. Jude Bio-Regenerative Center on the Upper East Side—the exclusive, ultra-luxury medical practice where Victoria had supposedly received prenatal care under the direction of Dr. Julian Sterling.
Dr. Sterling was a high-society darling. He catered to celebrities, hedge fund managers, and foreign diplomats, known for offering cutting-edge "integrative therapies" and absolute, ironclad discretion.
The rain had begun to fall over the city, slicking the asphalt under the neon glow of streetlights. Harrison arrived at the clinic past normal operating hours, but the lights on the fourth floor were burning bright. Harrison bypassed the locked lobby doors with a single heavy kick from Marcus’s operative, shattering the electronic strike plate.
They climbed the private stairs and pushed open the frosted glass doors of the executive suite.
Dr. Sterling was packing a leather duffel bag in his private office, sweat glistening on his receding hairline. Piles of shredded documents littered the Persian rug. The moment the office door slammed open, the doctor dropped a stack of passports onto his desk, his hands flying into the air.
"Harrison! Please! I was going to call you!" Sterling cried, his voice cracking with pure terror.
Harrison walked up to the mahogany desk, grabbed the doctor by his silk necktie, and slammed his face down onto the hard surface, pinning his cheek against the wood.
"You verified her pregnancy, Julian," Harrison whispered, drawing the amber vial from his pocket and placing it directly in front of the doctor’s eye. "You signed the medical certificates. You showed me the ultrasounds. And now, you're packing passports."
"I had no choice!" Sterling sobbed, saliva pooling at the corner of his pressed mouth. "They would have ruined me! They would have killed my daughter!"
"Who is 'they'?" Harrison increased the pressure on Sterling’s neck. "Give me the truth, or that window behind you is going to be your exit from this building."
"Victoria isn't pregnant!" Sterling choked out. "She couldn't be! She had a total radical hysterectomy five years ago in Zurich! I have her records! She’s physically incapable of bearing children!"
Harrison’s grip tightened. "And the ultrasounds?"
"Pre-recorded footage from another patient! I just edited your wife’s name onto the digital watermark! Harrison, Victoria isn't a socialite from Georgia. Her real name is Veronika Klein. She was an operative for a private syndicate—a group that targets high-net-worth widows and executives to liquidate their private holdings!"
"Who runs it, Julian?" Harrison leaned in, his voice a razor blade against the doctor's ear. "Who ordered Evelyn's murder?"
Sterling shook violently, his eyes bulging toward the duffel bag. "Look in the bag... the black phone... he calls it every evening at eight o'clock... if I don't answer, he’ll know the op is burned..."
Before Harrison could reach for the bag, the digital clock on the desk flipped to 8:00 PM.

The disposable burner phone inside the duffel bag began to vibrate, its shrill, buzzing ring slicing through the tension like an executioner’s axe.
