Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

The revelation hit Harrison like a physical blow. Arthur Blackwood was not merely a business partner; he was family royalty in Manhattan society. He had been Evelyn’s closest friend since their days at boarding school in Switzerland. When Evelyn had fallen ill, it was Arthur who had sat beside her bed, Arthur who had brought in specialized holistic caregivers—including Victoria.
And it was Arthur who had stood beside Harrison at the cemetery, tears rolling down his cheeks, promising that he would help oversee the Vance Foundation to protect Evelyn’s legacy.
*It was never about an affair. It was never about a simple embezzlement.*
Arthur Blackwood had engineered the systematic dismantling of the Vance family from the inside out. By replacing Evelyn with Victoria, faking a pregnancy with an heir, and poisoning Maya, Arthur was weeks away from legally assuming control of the entirety of the Vance estate through the board's emergency succession protocols.
Harrison tapped his phone, calling Marcus back at the estate. "Marcus, Arthur Blackwood is behind this."
"Sir?" Marcus’s voice spiked with adrenaline. "Blackwood just arrived at the front gates. He’s with four private security vehicles. They’re claiming they have a court-ordered emergency welfare check on Mrs. Vance."
Harrison slammed his hand against the car door. "Do not let them in! Lock the perimeter!"
"We’re trying, Mr. Vance, but they have local sheriff deputies with them. Victoria must have triggered a distress protocol before we secured her. They’re breaching the outer gate right now."
"I’m ten minutes away," Harrison snarled. "Fall back to the main house. Do whatever you have to do to protect the server room and keep Victoria locked down. I will handle Blackwood myself."
Harrison ordered his driver to floor the accelerator. The Maybach ripped through the rain-soaked parkway, engine screaming at ninety miles per hour.
Inside his mind, memories from the past two years flashed in rapid, horrifying succession. Evelyn growing weaker, complaining that her evening tea tasted strange. Arthur visiting weekly, always bringing imported herbal blends from Europe. The sudden deterioration of her speech, the terrifying seizures. And then, her final words, whispered to Harrison as she slipped into a coma: *"Harrison... watch the board... don't let him take the garden..."*
At the time, Harrison had thought it was the delirium of a dying woman. But Evelyn hadn't been talking about the flowers. The "Garden" was the internal codename for the Vance family’s offshore trust fund—the repository of their multi-generational wealth.
Ten minutes later, the Maybach skidded through the shattered iron gates of the Vance estate.
Two sheriff cruisers sat near the fountain, their red and blue lights painting the marble statues in garish strokes. But the deputies were nowhere to be seen. Beside them were three unmarked black SUVs, doors open, engines idling.
The front doors of the mansion hung wide open, splinters of broken mahogany littering the threshold.

Harrison drew a Glock 19 from the hidden compartment beneath the Maybach's center console, chambered a round, and stepped into the storm.
