Chapter 12 - The Twin in the Shadows: The Brother I Never Knew Existed

The silence that followed Alistair’s revelation felt heavier than the mountain snowdrifts that had nearly buried Emily alive months prior. Daniel stared down at the faded Polaroid photograph. His vision blurred, then hyper-focused with terrifying clarity. The infant in the picture beside him possessed his own facial features, the same dark hair, the exact crescent-shaped birthmark carved right along the jugular vein. A twin. A mirror image that history, Eleanor, and the Sterling fortune had systematically erased.
"His name was Julian," Alistair said calmly, picking up his leather gloves. "When Eleanor realized that twins would split the Charles Sterling trust fund in half, reducing her absolute sovereign control, she made a transaction. One child was kept for the public stage—the golden boy, the legitimate heir, Daniel. The other was consigned to a private medical sanctum in the Black Forest of Germany. A shadow kept in reserve, should the golden boy prove... disobedient."
"You're lying!" Emily hissed, shielding baby Sarah with her body. "Eleanor was a narcissist, but she was investigated by the FBI! Every hospital record, every birth registry was scrutinized!"
"Eleanor was an amateur compared to the men who funded her," Alistair replied. "The FBI searched public records. They did not search the private ledgers of the Iron League. Julian was raised without an identity, without affection, trained as an asset manager for the darker syndicates of Europe. For thirty years, he was told that Daniel stole his life, his wealth, and his mother's love. And yesterday, Julian arrived in New York."
A cold wind suddenly swept down from the summit of Mount Baldface, slamming an unlatched shutter against the side of the house with the crack of a gunshot. Emily gasped, retreating inside. Daniel stepped forward, his knuckles white as he pinned Alistair against the porch railing.
"Why are you telling me this?" Daniel growled, his voice vibrating with lethal intent. "If you work for him, why warn me?"
"Because, Mr. Sterling," Alistair whispered, unblinking despite the fingers digging into his lapels, "Julian has not come merely to claim the money. He believes your daughter’s blood contains the unique genetic markers required to unlock the biometric vaults of the Lin-Sterling estate in Zurich. He doesn't want to litigate. He wants Sarah. And he has hired the very mercenaries Eleanor abandoned during the blizzard. You have seventy-two hours before the legal injunction freezes every dollar your foundation holds, leaving you completely defenseless."
Alistair slipped from Daniel’s grip, adjusted his tie with surgical precision, and walked back down the stairs. "Check the surveillance cameras on your perimeter fence, Mr. Sterling. The watchmen you hired three months ago? They haven't reported in since midnight."
Daniel's heart stopped. He spun on his heel and rushed inside, locking the reinforced oak door behind him. He raced into his private study and booted up the high-definition perimeter monitors. Six separate screens blinked into existence.
Gate 1: Empty.
Gate 2: Static.
Gate 3: The security shack was bathed in red interior emergency light. Inside, through the glass, slumped two private guards. Neither was breathing.
On the desk beside Daniel, Emily’s satellite phone suddenly rang. The caller ID displayed an encrypted nine-digit sequence originating from a maritime vessel off the coast of Maine.
Daniel slammed the speaker button. "Who is this?"
May you like
A voice answered. It was so terrifyingly identical to Daniel’s own voice that Emily let out a muted scream. The pitch, the cadence, the subtle rasp in the throat—it was like hearing an echo from a haunted mirror.
"Hello, brother," the voice purred with chilled precision. "You took my crib. You took my name. You slept in silk while I slept in a sanitarium cage. But don't worry... I won't kill you quickly. I’m going to watch you watch me take your daughter."
