Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Snow

The journey into the Blackwood Valley felt like a descent into the underworld. The blizzard had transformed the winding two-lane mountain road into a treacherous ribbon of white, flanked by sheer granite drop-offs and towering, snow-laden pines that groaned under the weight of the storm.
Inside the SUV, the silence was suffocating. Marcus drove with white-knuckled concentration, his eyes fixed on the narrow cone of light carved out by the headlights. In the back, Daniel sat beside Emily, his arm wrapped around her shoulder, his teeth gritted against the relentless, blinding agony in his lower back. Every bump in the road felt like a chisel striking his shattered vertebrae, but he didn't utter a single sound.
Emily stared out the fogged window, one hand resting on the swell of her stomach. The baby was kicking violently, as if sensing the adrenaline surging through its mother's bloodstream.
"Daniel," she whispered, her voice barely louder than the hum of the engine. "On the mountain... before she kicked the chair."
Daniel looked down at her. "What is it, sweetheart?"
"She leaned down," Emily swallowed, her throat dry. "I thought she was just taunting me. But she said something else. Right before she kicked the brakes."
"What did she say?"
"She said: *'You won't live to expose what happened to Daniel's real father.'*"
The interior of the SUV seemed to drop ten degrees. Marcus glanced into the rearview mirror, his eyes widening.
Daniel froze. "*Real* father? What does that mean? Charles was my father."
"She didn't sound like she was lying, Daniel," Emily said, turning her tear-streaked face to him. "She said it with so much venom... as if she hated Charles, but hated *you* even more because of who you really were."
"Marcus," Daniel barked, leaning forward against his seatbelt. "What did the original trust say? Read it again."
Marcus shook his head while wrestling the steering wheel against a gust of lateral wind. "Clause 14-B: The estate passes to Charles Sterling’s *biological* heir. Daniel, your father had a strict bloodline clause inserted into the trust thirty years ago. Why would he do that unless—"
"Unless he suspected Eleanor was being unfaithful," Daniel finished, the room in his head spinning into a vortex of dark revelations. "Or unless... I’m not his."
"No," Marcus countered. "If you weren't Charles's biological son, the trust wouldn't pass to your child. Eleanor would have had you disqualified decades ago with a simple DNA test! She wouldn't need to kill you!"
"Unless the DNA test would prove someone else was my father," Daniel whispered, "someone who had a legal claim that would destroy her entirely."
Suddenly, Marcus slammed on the brakes.
The heavy SUV skidded sideways across the ice, its anti-lock brakes pulsing violently before the vehicle came to a shuddering halt.
"What is it?!" Emily gasped, bracing herself against the dashboard.
Marcus pointed through the windshield. Fifty yards ahead, bathed in the eerie glare of the high beams, a massive pine tree lay across the narrow road, completely blocking the path. Its trunk had not fallen naturally; the edges were jaggedly severed, cut clean through by a chainsaw.
"It's a roadblock," Marcus whispered, reaching into the glove compartment and pulling out a Glock 19. "They knew we were coming."
Behind them, through the swirling blizzard, two sets of halogen headlights pierced the darkness.
Two black, heavy-duty pickup trucks emerged from the whiteout, boxing the SUV in from the rear. Their engines roared like predatory beasts, exhaust billowing into the freezing air.
"Out! Get out now!" Daniel yelled, kicking his door open.
He didn't wait for his broken body to complain. Fueled by pure, fatherly terror, Daniel pulled Emily out of the SUV, sweeping her into his arms. "Marcus, into the tree line! Move!"
A deafening crack shattered the night air. A high-caliber rifle round ripped through the SUV’s rear windshield, spraying safety glass across the interior.
Marcus fired three blind rounds into the darkness toward the trucks to provide cover. "RUN!"
Daniel stumbled into the deep snow drifts, carrying Emily. The snow was waist-deep in places, pulling at his boots like freezing concrete. With every step, a hot dagger twisted in his spine, sending blinding white flashes across his vision. Emily tried to put her feet down to take the weight off him, but her cast dragged through the powder, rendering her completely immobile.
"Daniel, put me down! You can't carry me!" she sobbed, the bitter wind tearing the words from her mouth.
"I am not leaving you!" Daniel roared, his boots churning through the drifts, his lungs burning with ice. "I will die before I let her touch you!"
Ahead, nestled among the dense pines on a rocky outcropping, the dark, timber silhouette of the hunting cabin appeared.

Behind them, the roar of snowmobiles ignited the blizzard. Eleanor’s hunters were closing in.
