Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Scalpel

The atmosphere in the room turned sub-zero.

Marcus stood up immediately, putting himself between the men in suits and the hospital beds. His jaw was clenched, his fists balling up at his sides. "Dad? What the hell are you doing here? I told you to stay out of this."

Dr. Arthur Vance did not look like a man proud of his actions. His shoulders were slumped, his silver hair unkempt, and the deep creases around his eyes spoke of chronic, sleepless terror. But behind that exhaustion was the desperation of a cornered beast.

"Marcus, step aside," Dr. Vance said, his voice trembling slightly. "You are meddling in affairs you do not fully comprehend. You think you're playing the righteous hero, but you are walking all of us straight to the gallows."

"You signed off on Charles's death certificate," Daniel said from the bed, his voice deathly calm, though the cardiac monitor began to beep at a frantic tempo. "Congestive heart failure. That was your diagnosis, Arthur. You covered up my father’s murder."

Dr. Vance flinched as if struck across the face. One of the men in black suits stepped forward, his hand pressing against the fabric of his jacket, revealing the distinct outline of a concealed firearm.

"Shut your mouth, kid," the suited man growled.

"Don't touch him!" Emily screamed, pulling the thin hospital blanket tighter against her body.

"Stand down, Briggs!" Dr. Vance barked at the guard, before turning back to Daniel. "You think I had a choice, Daniel? Five years ago, Eleanor invited me to dinner. She didn't just ask for my silence. She showed me photographs of my grandchildren. She showed me surveillance files detailing their school routes, their bedrooms, their playgrounds. Eleanor does not negotiate. She eradicates."

"So you helped her poison my father?" Daniel spat, trying to sit up, the agony in his spine flaring violently. "And you helped her poison Emily? Those prenatal vitamins you prescribed her—what was in them, Arthur?!"

Dr. Vance swallowed hard, looking down at the pristine linoleum floor. "Micro-doses of digitalis. Just enough to induce syncope, dizziness, cardiac irregularities. The plan was never for the baby to be born. It was supposed to look like a spontaneous, tragic late-term miscarriage brought on by maternal physiological weakness. When Emily survived the fall down the stairs with only a broken ankle, Eleanor panicked. The mountain trip was improvised."

"You monstrous coward," Marcus hissed at his father, his eyes shining with tears of betrayal. "You took the Hippocratic Oath! You watched Daniel grow up! You’re helping her commit infanticide!"

"I am saving our family, Marcus!" Dr. Vance shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Eleanor has half the state judiciary in her pocket! The district attorney owes his entire political career to the Sterling Foundation! If Eleanor falls, she will take everyone down with her—including us! She sent Briggs here to collect Emily’s medical records and ensure she is transferred to our private clinic upstate."

"She’s not going anywhere," Daniel snarled, ripping the IV line out of his arm. A trickle of dark blood ran down his hand, but he didn't care. "You touch my wife, and I swear to God, Arthur, I will rip your throat out with my bare hands."

The guard named Briggs stepped forward, a cold, sneering smile spreading across his scarred face. He drew a suppressed 9mm pistol from his coat, keeping it low, aimed directly at Emily’s swollen belly.

"Mister Sterling, I suggest you lie back down before this gets messy," Briggs whispered. "The missus is coming with us. A quiet ride in a private ambulance. If she survives the night, maybe you get to see her again. If you scream, the kid dies right here, right now, and we’ll write it off as an emergency medical catastrophe."

Emily began to sob quietly, paralyzed with fear. Daniel looked at the gun, his mind racing against the ticking clock of their impending execution.

Then, Marcus moved.

With the speed of a former college athlete, Marcus grabbed the heavy metal IV stand and swung it like a baseball bat. The steel base slammed violently into the side of Briggs’s head with a sickening crunch.

Briggs groaned, his gun discharging with a muffled *thwip* that sent a bullet tearing through the mattress between Daniel’s legs. The second guard lunged forward, drawing his weapon, but Daniel, ignoring the blinding fire in his shattered spine, lunged off the bed with all his weight.

Daniel crashed onto the second guard, driving his elbow into the man’s throat. Both men hit the floor in a tangled heap of shattered hospital equipment, blood, and screaming monitors.
