Chapter 29 - THE BLOOD DUET

The screech of the dissonant frequency tore through the auditorium’s sound system with the force of an acoustic shockwave. High above the stage, the massive crystal chandelier, weakened by decades of neglect, shuddered as its glass pendants shattered simultaneously into thousands of falling, razor-sharp shards.
The ear-splitting shriek of feedback threw Grace off balance. Her shot went wild, the bullet punching through the lid of the Steinway piano.
Daniel lunged forward, tackling Grace around the waist.
They crashed violently against the polished hardwood stage. Daniel’s Glock skittered across the floor, falling into the open trapdoor of the stage machinery below. Grace fought with a feral, terrifying strength, her titanium hand braces functioning like brass knuckles as she slammed a vicious backhand across Daniel’s jaw.
The metal ripped across Daniel’s cheek, blinding him with blood, but he didn't let go. He locked his arms around her wrists, pinning her against the floor.
"It's over, Grace!" Daniel roared, spit and blood spraying from his lips. "It's over!"
Grace glared up at him, her face contorted into a mask of pure, demonic rage. Her lip was split, her dark hair wild and tangled. "You think you've won? Look at the timers, Daniel!"
Daniel glanced up at the nearest pillar.
The jarring frequency from Lily’s final dissonant chord had tripped the acoustic sensors on the C4 detonators.
The digital displays were no longer counting down minutes.
They were flashing in rapid, frantic intervals: *00:45... 00:44... 00:43...*
"Miller!" Daniel screamed. "Get Lily out! The charges are live!"
Miller burst onto the stage, bleeding from a shoulder wound sustained in the firefight with the private contractors. He scooped Lily up into his arms. The little girl was limp, her eyes fluttering, exhausted by the psychological toll of the sequence.
"I’m not leaving you, Daniel!" Miller shouted, his boots sliding on the glass-covered stage.
"Take her! Go!" Daniel ordered, his voice brooking no argument. "Run, Miller! Now!"
Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, looked at the child in his arms, and turned, sprinting through the stage door into the rainy night.
Grace laughed—a broken, hysterical sound that echoed against the falling plaster. "You saved her, Daniel. How noble. How utterly, predictably pathetic. But you die here with me."
With a sudden, violent surge, Grace twisted beneath him. Her braced hand reached into her coat and pulled the pin from a tactical fragmentation grenade she had concealed against her ribs.
"If I can't have the key," Grace whispered into his ear with chilling intimacy, "the legacy burns tonight."
Daniel’s instincts took over. He grabbed the cylinder of the grenade, jamming his thumb beneath the spoon to delay the spring, and with a primal roar, rolled off Grace, kicking her hard in the ribs to create separation.
He scrambled to his feet. The timer on the main charges hit *00:15*.
Grace scrambled toward the piano, lunging for the nickel-plated pistol she had dropped.
Daniel hurled the grenade toward the rear fire exit, dived across the stage, and grabbed the iron lever of the counterweight fly system—the ropes controlling the heavy iron fire curtain designed to seal the stage from the auditorium in the event of a blaze.
"Daniel, no!" Grace shrieked, turning with the gun raised.
Daniel yanked the emergency release lever with every ounce of strength remaining in his battered body.
