Chapter 37 - THE DEVIL’S RECITAL

Back inside the glass citadel, the second hex screw snapped free. Daniel worked with bleeding fingers, stripping the third screw with desperate, frantic turns.

Behind the panel lay a web of fiber-optic cabling and the high-voltage electrical trunk line feeding the observation room’s biometric security lock.

Daniel didn't know how to hack a computer, but he knew how to cause a short circuit. He grabbed the heavy silver ice bucket, poured the melted ice water directly into the exposed junction box, and slammed the metal tongs across the positive and negative copper terminals.

*BANG!*

A blinding flash of blue electrical fire erupted from the wall. The pungent smell of ozone filled the room. The lights flickered, died, and with a pneumatic hiss, the magnetic lock on the heavy vault door lost power, popping open by two inches.

Daniel threw his weight against the door, slipping through the gap into the darkened service corridor.

Down in the subterranean concert hall, the stage lights blazed with blinding intensity.

Seated at the towering Steinway grand piano was Lily.

She was dressed in a pristine white silk gown, looking like an ethereal, ghostly porcelain doll. Her tiny feet barely reached the pedals. Her eyes were glazed over, staring blankly at the polished keys before her.

Above the stage, massive digital screens illuminated the dark walls. Twenty-four encrypted video streams from around the globe flickered to life. Faceless avatars, masked silhouettes of billionaires, corrupt diplomats, and black-market brokers—the silent audience of monsters waiting for the show to begin.

Grace Sterling stood at a podium to the side of the stage, dressed in an imperial crimson evening gown, holding a slender gold microphone.

"Welcome, patrons of the Sterling Legacy," Grace addressed the screens, her voice dripping with venomous charisma. "Tonight, you bear witness to the dawn of a new era. What you are about to hear is not merely music. It is absolute subjugation of will through artistic perfection. The bidding for the master contracts will begin precisely upon the conclusion of the final movement."

Grace turned toward Lily.

"Begin, my angel," Grace commanded softly. "Brahms. Movement Three."

Lily’s small, pale hands hovered over the keys.

From the shadows of the upper mezzanine, Daniel emerged onto the catwalk above the stage. He looked down and saw his daughter's trembling fingers.

She was about to strike the opening chord—the chord that would seal her psychological imprisonment forever.

"LILY!" Daniel’s voice tore through the acoustic perfection of the hall like a sonic boom.

Grace gasped, whipping her head upward. The security guards on the perimeter snapped their rifles toward the catwalk.

Daniel leaped over the railing, catching a hanging acoustic banner, sliding down thirty feet of reinforced fabric, and crashing onto the polished stage floor with a bone-jarring impact.

"LILY, DON'T PLAY IT!" Daniel screamed, coughing up blood, scrambling to his feet. "DON'T LISTEN TO HER!"
