Chapter 35 - SYMPHONY OF THE CONDEMNED

Daniel was thrown into an expansive room on the lower tier of the citadel. The door sealed behind him with the heavy, hydraulic thud of a bank vault.

The room was not a cell in the traditional sense; it was an opulent, soundproofed observation lounge. One entire wall was made of five-inch-thick acoustic glass, looking directly down into a breathtaking, subterranean concert hall carved out of the living bedrock of the island.

In the center of that underground arena sat a single nine-foot Steinway grand piano, bathed in a stark, solitary cone of white light. Surrounding the stage were semi-circular tiers of luxurious leather seating, complete with digital terminals and encrypted satellite link screens.

Daniel dragged himself to his feet, clutching his bruised ribs. He slammed his fists against the glass wall. It was impenetrable; the impact barely produced a dull thud.

A hidden speaker in the ceiling clicked.

"Save your energy, Daniel," Grace's voice drifted down, crystal clear and rich with theatrical resonance. "That glass is rated to withstand a high-yield anti-tank round. You cannot break it. But you can hear everything. The acoustics in this facility cost forty million dollars. Every breath, every key strike, every scream is captured in absolute perfection."

"Why, Grace?" Daniel shouted toward the ceiling, tears of rage tracking through the dried blood on his face. "Why all of this? Why the fake death? Why Lily?"

Grace stepped into the light on the stage below, walking slowly toward the Steinway. She ran a single, gloved hand across the polished ebony lid of the instrument.

"You think this started with me, Daniel? You think I am the monster?" Grace laughed—a low, melodic, venomous sound. "My mother—the saintly Victoria Sterling you all wept for—she was the true architect. When I was Lily's age, she locked me in a dark cellar for eighteen hours a day with nothing but a metronome. If I missed a note, she struck my knuckles with an ivory ruler. She didn't want a daughter; she wanted a prodigy to fund her dynasty."

Grace stopped, turning her gaze upward toward Daniel's glass box.

"When Lily was born, I saw the genius in her fingers. I saw what Victoria had tried to force out of me, but in Lily, it was pure. Untainted. Victoria realized it too. She knew that if I controlled Lily's career, the Sterling empire would belong entirely to me. So that night at the concert hall... Victoria didn't push Lily to kill her."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"

"She pushed her to destroy her hands!" Grace’s voice rose into a shrill, hysterical crescendo. "Victoria tried to cripple my daughter so I couldn't use her! She wanted to smash Lily’s fingers on the marble floor below! You caught her, Daniel. You were the brave, ignorant fool who caught the bird before it hit the cage!"

Daniel stared down at Grace through the glass. The puzzle pieces of the past five years—the horrifying trial, Victoria's bizarre statements before her mysterious death in prison, the hidden bank accounts—suddenly snapped together into a terrifying mosaic of generational madness.

"You had your own mother murdered in prison," Daniel whispered, the realization hitting him like ice water. "Chapter 25... the cell execution. You orchestrated it."

"She was a failed relic," Grace said smoothly, dusting off her lapels. "Her execution was merely the removal of an obsolete variable. But Lily... Lily is the masterpiece. Tonight, at 5:00 AM, our private auction opens. Twenty-four of the most powerful collectors in the world are currently logged into our secure feed. They aren't bidding on art, Daniel. They are bidding on patronage. They are buying the exclusive rights to Lily's life, her music, her genetic legacy."

"She is a child!" Daniel screamed, slamming his shoulder against the glass. "You cannot sell your own child!"

"I am not selling her," Grace smiled, her eyes widening with absolute, unhinged ecstasy. "I am crowning her. And if she fails to perform tonight... if she misses a single measure of the 'Blood Duet'... she won't survive the finale."
