Chapter 10 - The Sterling Fall

A tall, silver-haired man in a sharply tailored charcoal suit walked into the server room, followed by four uniformed NYPD officers and a court clerk carrying an official leather-bound ledger.

"Good evening, Evelyn," Judge Harrison said, his voice echoing with booming authority. "It seems your wedding reception has relocated to rather unglamorous quarters."

Evelyn staggered back a half-step, her hand dropping the fire-hose nozzle. "Harold... what is the meaning of this?"

"The meaning of this, Evelyn, is that Julian called me forty-five minutes ago with high-definition video of your daughter committing aggravated attempted murder," Judge Harrison said, signaling to the lead officer. "Officers, arrest Victoria Sterling."

"Wait! No! Mother, do something!" Victoria screamed as the two officers grabbed her arms, hauled her out of the chair, and shoved her against the server rack to cuff her wrists behind her back. "You can't let them arrest me! I did this for you!"

"I have no knowledge of my daughter’s criminal actions," Evelyn said instantly, her voice cold as ice, completely cutting Victoria loose to save herself. "She acted entirely on her own. I was merely down here trying to talk her into turning herself in."

Victoria stared at her mother, a choked, agonizing sob tearing from her throat as the reality of her total betrayal settled in. "You monster," Victoria whispered. "You cold, heartless monster."

The officers dragged Victoria out into the hallway, her boots scraping violently against the floor as her hysterical screams faded down the concrete corridor.

"Now, Harold," Evelyn said smoothly, turning her attention back to the judge, her aristocratic arrogance recovering with frightening speed. "Even with Victoria’s unfortunate... breakdown... the legal reality of the trust remains. It is 11:32 PM. Clara and Julian are not legally married. The clause requires an ordained officiant and two blood witnesses before midnight. You are a judge, Harold, not an ordained minister. You cannot solemnize a marriage under the specific terms of Arthur Vance’s ecclesiastical codicil."

Clara’s heart dropped. *An ecclesiastical codicil.* Arthur Vance had been an obsessive legal strategist; he had specified an ordained church minister to prevent a quick courthouse wedding.

"She's right, Harold," Julian said, his jaw tightening. "The terms specify an ordained Christian minister."

Judge Harrison looked at Julian, then at Evelyn, and a slow, triumphant grin spread across his weathered face.

"Evelyn," Judge Harrison chuckled, pulling a laminated card from his wallet and flashing it in front of her face. "You’ve known me for thirty years, but you clearly never read my bio in the state registry. Before I went to Harvard Law, I spent four years at Princeton Theological Seminary. I was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1984. I have renewed my ministerial credentials every single year just in case I had the good fortune of officiating a wedding that would ruin you."

Evelyn’s breath hitched. Her eyes widened in pure, unadulterated horror. "No..."

"Yes," Judge Harrison said. He turned to his court clerk and the two remaining NYPD officers. "We have the officiant. We have the legal authority. But we do need two witnesses."

"Blood witnesses," Evelyn snarled desperately. "The codicil states two witnesses of Sterling or Vance blood! You have neither!"

Clara stepped forward. She reached out and took Evelyn’s hand.

Evelyn tried to pull away, but Clara’s grip—strengthened by years of surviving on the street and fueled by cold, righteous fury—clamped down like a vise.

"You are a Sterling by marriage, Evelyn," Clara said, her voice steady and lethal. "And you are standing right here."

"I will never sign as a witness!" Evelyn spat, glaring at Clara with venomous hatred. "I would rather burn this city to the ground!"

"If you don't sign as the first witness, Evelyn," Julian said, stepping up beside Clara, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper, "I will authorize the DA to release the audio recordings from the penthouse suite. The ones where you admitted to unlocking the gate for Victoria. The ones where you instructed her to cover up the crime. You won't just lose the company, Mother. You will spend your remaining golden years in a federal penitentiary for conspiracy to commit murder."

Evelyn looked at Julian. Then she looked at the handcuffs hanging from the officer's belt.

May you like

Her chest heaved. The veins in her neck pulsed with suppressed rage. For the first time in sixty years, the great Evelyn Sterling was completely, irrevocably trapped.
