Chapter 15 - The Blood Covenant

"Get to the panic vault beneath the wine cellar," Julian ordered, immediately drawing his secondary weapon from an under-desk holster and tossing an automatic pistol to Clara.

Clara caught the weapon with instinctive familiarity, checking the chamber and releasing the slide with a clean, metallic *clack*. Julian didn't comment on her proficiency, but the grim set of his jaw hardened.

"Donovan's team has eighteen men on the perimeter," Julian said, moving toward the heavy reinforced door of the master suite. "The outer gates have heavy vehicle barriers. They can't cross the bridge without heavy armor."

"They don't need heavy armor," Clara said, her eyes fixed on the panoramic windows. "Look at the river."

Down below, cutting through the black waters of the Hudson with terrifying speed, three black rigid-inflatable boats were gliding toward the rocky base of the cliff. Simultaneously, the rhythmic, heavy thump of a twin-rotor military helicopter echoed above the estate, flying low beneath radar coverage.

A massive explosion rattled the foundations of the mansion. The blast wave blew the floor-to-ceiling glass inward, the reinforced safety glass fracturing into millions of spiderweb cracks before collapsing into sheets of crystalline debris. Julian tackled Clara to the floor, shielding her body with his own as sharp shards rained over their backs.

"Julian!" Clara gasped beneath him, coughing as smoke and cold night air poured into the room.

"I'm fine," he growled, rising instantly, pulling her to her feet. Blood trickled from a shallow cut on his temple, mixing with the sweat on his skin.

From the corridor outside, rapid bursts of automatic gunfire broke out, accompanied by the muffled thuds of flashbang grenades. The defense team was already engaged. Screams, curses, and the sharp bark of tactical commands tore through the pristine silence of the estate.

Julian kicked open the hidden service door behind the master closet, revealing a narrow concrete stairwell leading into the bedrock beneath the foundation. "Down. Now."

They descended rapidly into the subterranean levels, the sound of combat echoing above them like thunder trapped in an iron drum. When they reached the reinforced vault door at the bottom, Julian entered an eight-digit biometric code. The heavy steel door slid open with a hiss of pneumatic seals, revealing an emergency command room fitted with satellite monitors, emergency weapons lockers, and communication relays.

Julian slammed the heavy locking bar into place. On the surveillance monitors, they watched in real-time as the tactical team—all wearing the ouroboros patch—systematically cleared the ground floor. Leading them, dressed in sleek tactical gear and holding a silenced submachine gun with lethal confidence, was Victoria Vance.

Her face, once pristine and pampered by the finest dermatologists on Park Avenue, was hardened into a mask of cold sociopathy. Beside her walked a man in his late fifties, his silver hair slicked back, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit despite the tactical raid.

Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Marcus," she breathed.

Marcus Vance looked directly into one of the security cameras, as if he knew Julian and Clara were watching from the vault. He raised a hand, making a polite, mocking gesture of greeting, then leaned toward the audio receiver near the main foyer console.

His voice crackled through the vault’s intercom speakers, warm, cultured, and terrifyingly calm.

"Clara, darling," Marcus said, his voice echoing in the concrete room. "I must apologize for Victoria’s theatrical performance on the penthouse roof. She has always lacked finesse. The plunge was a bit excessive, though I must admit, watching young Julian dive fifty stories into the water was remarkably romantic. True cinema."

Julian stepped toward the microphone console, his finger hovering over the transmit button. Clara grabbed his wrist.

"Don't," she whispered. "He wants you emotional. He wants you to act like your father did before the Swiss summit."

Julian paused, breathing heavily through his nose, then slowly depressed the button. "You're trespassing on Sterling ground, Marcus. You have three minutes before the National Guard quick-reaction force out of Stewart Base arrives on this grid."

Marcus chuckled, a dry, aristocratic sound. "The National Guard won't be coming, Julian. Your family spent a century buying senators; my organization spent thirty years buying the colonels who actually command the battalions. By sunrise, this estate will be registered as the site of a tragic domestic murder-suicide. The heartbroken bride, Clara Vance, succumbed to guilt after her father's past was exposed, took Julian’s life, and then her own. The tragic Sterling dynasty... extinguished by its own hubris."

"What do you want, Marcus?" Julian demanded.

"Open the vault, Julian," Marcus said smoothly. "Give me the primary encryption drive that your uncle Arthur brought back from Zurich. Give me that, and I might just let Clara live. After all... blood is thicker than water. Isn't that right, my sweet Clara?"

Clara looked at the monitor, then at Julian. In the corner of the vault stood the primary server terminal where Arthur's physical encryption drive was currently transferring the complete financial ledger of the Sterling Trust.

"He doesn't want the money, Julian," Clara said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, brilliant realization. "He doesn't need your billions. The ledger contains the names of every foreign dignitary, every intelligence director, and every offshore account the Consortium used to launder money through your father’s ships. If that drive finishes uploading to the federal server, Marcus Vance and his entire network will be executed for high treason by five different sovereign nations."

The monitor showed the upload progress bar on the terminal: **68% complete... 69% complete...**

Marcus’s voice turned ice-cold over the intercom. "You have sixty seconds, Julian. Then we deploy the hydraulic cutting torches through the vault seals. And I promise you, Clara will watch you bleed out before I break every bone in her hands."

Julian looked at Clara. For the first time since the wedding bells rang, all doubt vanished from his eyes. He saw the fire in her, the absolute, burning hatred she held for the monster who called himself her father.

"Do you know how to shoot that rifle on the wall?" Julian asked, gesturing toward a tactical FN SCAR mounted in the weapons rack.

Clara smiled—a dangerous, predatory smile that belonged to a true survivor.

"I grew up in Chicago, Julian," she whispered. "Let them cut the door."
