Chapter 16 - The Breach at Midnight

The smell of burning steel filled the underground bunker as two hydraulic thermite cutters bit through the six-inch titanium door frame. Sparks sprayed into the darkness of the vault like molten gold, casting grotesque, shifting shadows across the reinforced walls.

Julian stood behind an overturned steel workbench in the center of the command room, his rifle sighted dead-center on the breach point. Clara was positioned ten feet to his left, using an armored electrical cabinet as cover, her FN SCAR resting firmly on the edge, safety off, breathing slow and controlled.

"Upload is at eighty-two percent," Clara whispered without looking away from the sights. "Four minutes left."

"They won't need four minutes to breach," Julian replied, his voice dropping into the cold, calculated register of a combat commander. "When the seals pop, they'll throw a dual-flashbang barrage to blind us. Close your eyes and fire on the choke point. Don't look at the light."

A massive mechanical groan tore through the vault as the hydraulic jacks forced the compromised locking pins out of the granite frame.

*BANG! BANG!*

Two canisters clattered through the widening gap, erupting into a deafening roar of blinding white magnesium fire. Clara shut her eyes tight, biting her tongue until she tasted copper to maintain focus against the concussive pressure wave that rocked her eardrums.

Instantly, Julian’s rifle began to bark in rhythmic, three-round bursts: *Thump-thump-thump! Thump-thump-thump!*

Through the smoke, the first two mercenary operatives stumbled inward, their tactical armor taking heavy impacts before both dropped to the concrete, their weapons clattering away.

"Advance! Suppress them!" Victoria’s voice screamed from the corridor. She was firing blindly around the frame with an automatic pistol, her voice cracked with hysterical frenzy. "Kill him! Kill Julian! Leave Clara for Marcus!"

Clara opened her eyes, blinking away the white spots in her vision, and acquired the doorframe. A third operative leaned through with a heavy combat shotgun—Clara squeezed the trigger twice. The high-caliber rounds punched through his tactical vest, hurling him backward into the smoke.

"Clear left!" Clara shouted.

"Advancing!" Julian yelled, moving forward with lethal efficiency, using the heavy steel workbench as mobile cover. He cleared the doorframe, firing two rounds down the narrow corridor to force the remaining mercenaries into retreat.

The upload monitor beeped with an urgent, electronic chime: **Upload Complete: Federal Secure Server Synchronized.**

"It’s sent!" Clara yelled. "The files are in the hands of the Attorney General's emergency task force!"

In the corridor above, Marcus Vance heard the chime through his tactical earpiece. His calm, aristocratic demeanor finally cracked. Over the intercom, his voice turned into an enraged screech.

"Burn the entire estate! Blow the charges on the river cliff! Drop the house into the gorge! NOW!"

"Marcus, no! We're still down here!" Victoria screamed from the corridor outside the vault, her eyes wild with terror as the reality of her father's cold sociopathy dawned on her. "Father! Wait!"

A series of dull, subterranean thuds vibrated through the bedrock beneath their feet. Marcus had wired the support pillars of the cliffside estate with commercial demolition charges. He wasn't planning on taking the drive back anymore—he was burying the evidence, his daughter, and his enemies under two hundred thousand tons of granite.

"Julian! We have to move!" Clara yelled, abandoning her position and rushing into the corridor.

Victoria was on her knees near the blown vault door, her gun lying forgotten in the dust, staring toward the stairs where Marcus’s elite guards were already retreating toward the helipad, abandoning her without a backward glance.

"He left me..." Victoria whispered, her hands clawing at the concrete, her designer clothes stained with soot and blood. "He said... he said I was his favorite... he promised me the shipping fleet..."

Julian marched up to his sister, his rifle held low. He looked down at her with a look of absolute disgust. "You tried to drown Clara. You conspired with the man who murdered our father. You're not his daughter, Victoria. You were just an unpaid asset."

Julian grabbed Victoria by the collar of her tactical vest, hoisting her to her feet with one arm despite her hysterical struggles. "Move! Or die under this rock!"

"The service tunnel under the wine cellar leads to the boathouse!" Clara yelled over the increasing roar of collapsing masonry. Cracks were already racing across the concrete ceiling of the bunker, dust raining down in blinding curtains. "If we hit the river, we have a chance!"

They sprinted down the narrow drainage tunnel as the ceiling behind them gave way with a deafening, apocalyptic roar. Millions of pounds of luxury architecture, granite, and steel collapsed downward, sealing the vault forever beneath a mountain of pulverized rock.
