Chapter 17 - The Shadow in the Nursery

The sound of Eleanor’s voice inside the house she had designed was more terrifying than the gunfire in the Everglades.

Julian stood frozen in the doorway of the nursery, his hands trembling as he stared at the twenty-foot glass wall. Behind him, Peter Lang dropped a roll of medical gauze onto the floor, his face drained of all color.

"That’s impossible," Peter choked out. "Eleanor was in an induced coma seventy-two hours ago. Her cerebral activity was nearly flatlined! She couldn't be coherent!"

*"I was never in a coma, Peter,"* the woman on the screen said, her dark eyes locking onto the camera lens with predatory focus. On the screen behind her, massive acrylic viewports revealed the horrifying reality of her location: the absolute, lightless ink of the deep ocean, where strange, bioluminescent creatures drifted past the reinforced glass of a submerged underwater complex. *"You were simply allowed to believe what your fragile conscience needed to survive."*

Julian stepped into the great room, shielding Clara behind his leg. He looked past the face on the screen, his analytical mind dissecting the video feed. "You aren't Eleanor."

The woman tilted her head, a faint, chilling smirk curving her pale lips. *"Is that what you tell yourself to bear the guilt, Julian? You left me in that clinic. You let Arthur sign the papers. You were so consumed with your empire, your patents, your billions, that you never noticed who was sleeping beside you."*

"Eleanor had a microscopic scar on her left clavicle from a sailing accident when she was twelve," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute certainty. "She had a slight vocal hesitation when she pronounced words beginning with a hard consonant. You have neither. Who the hell are you?"

The woman stared through the glass, her smirk widening into an expression of grotesque amusement. She slowly reached up to her neck, unclipping the medical sensor, and leaned forward until her face dominated the entire display.

*"My name is Vivienne Thorne,"* she whispered. *"Eleanor’s identical twin. The sister your beloved family paid twenty million dollars to erase from the public record thirty years ago."*

Julian felt the room spinning violently. *An identical twin.*

"Eleanor never mentioned a sister," Marcus Kane rasped from the kitchen island, holding his bleeding shoulder as he dragged himself upright.

*"Of course she didn't!"* Vivienne snapped, her voice suddenly spiking with venomous, psychotic rage. *"Eleanor was the golden child! The prodigy who went to MIT, who inherited the Thorne patents, who married the brilliant tech mogul! While I was locked away in private sanitariums in Geneva because my brain didn't conform to the family's pristine pedigree! But who do you think designed the core algorithms for the Charybdis project? Who do you think realized that human consciousness could be mirrored in deep-sea optical data? It wasn't Eleanor. She stole my work! She built Vance Global on my madness!"*

Vivienne stood up from the clinical chair on the screen. Behind her, two armed men in deep-water pressure suits stepped into view.

*"Eleanor is here, Julian,"* Vivienne said, her tone softening into a sickening mockery of tenderness. *"She really is at the bottom of the Milwaukee Deep. She’s alive, plugged into the mainframe of the Nadir platform. But her body is failing. Her heart won't survive another forty-eight hours under the atmospheric pressure of this trench."*

Vivienne reached off-screen and pulled a live diagnostic monitor into view. It displayed a human ECG—weak, erratic, the pulse rate hovering dangerously at thirty-four beats per minute.

*"Eleanor’s retina can still unlock the primary vault,"* Vivienne continued, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. *"But the system requires a bi-lateral confirmation from an uncorrupted genetic match to verify that the host is not acting under duress. Clara's retina provides the counter-signature. If Clara’s eye isn't scanned into the Nadir terminal within twelve hours, the failsafe protocol will flood Eleanor’s chamber with liquid nitrogen. She will be frozen solid seven miles beneath the sea."*

"You're a monster," Julian whispered.

*"I am your wife's sister, Julian. And I am offering you a trade,"* Vivienne’s voice became razor-sharp. *"Bring Clara to the coordinates I’m uploading to your aircraft terminal. Come alone in your deep-submersible, the *Proteus*. If you alert the Navy, if you bring Marcus Kane, if you hesitate for even one second... I will disconnect Eleanor’s oxygen before you clear the continental shelf."*

The screen flickered violently.

**DATA TRANSMISSION COMPLETE. DESTINATION: TRENCH STATION NADIR. COUNTDOWN: 11 HOURS, 58 MINUTES.**

The glass wall snapped back to black, plunging the house back into the eerie glow of the mountain sleet.

Julian didn't move. He stood in the center of the silent room, his hands clenched into fists so tight that blood began to seep from his palms where his nails had broken the skin.

"Julian..." Marcus whispered, leaning against the counter, his face pale. "It's a slaughterhouse. If you take Clara down there, neither of you is ever coming back to the surface. She’s going to kill all three of you the second that vault unlocks."

Julian slowly turned toward the bedroom.

Clara was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the empty, sliced-open shell of her stuffed rabbit. She wasn't crying. She looked up at her father with eyes that held an ancient, terrible sorrow.

"Daddy?" she asked quietly. "Are we going to save Mommy now?"

May you like

Julian walked into the room, knelt before his daughter, and pressed his forehead against hers.

"Yes, baby," Julian whispered, a lethal, unbreakable calm settling over his soul. "We’re going to get Mommy back. And then Daddy is going to burn that ocean to the ground."
