Chapter 9 - The Final Broadcast

The penthouse of the Sterling Tower occupied the sixty-fourth floor, offering a panoramic, floor-to-ceiling vista of Biscayne Bay and the gray Atlantic beyond. Inside, the atmosphere was one of solemn, manufactured tragedy.

Arthur Sterling stood beside a polished mahogany podium, dressed in a bespoke charcoal-gray Brioni suit, his antique Patek Philippe glinting beneath the recessed LED lighting. Around him stood twenty-five members of the Vance Technologies board of directors, key institutional investors, and several high-ranking naval procurement liaisons.

Catering staff in white jackets circulated silently with silver trays of espresso and pastries, their movements hushed out of deference to the "grieving" CFO.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur began, his voice carrying the perfect timbre of sorrow and stoic leadership. He dabbed a linen handkerchief at the corner of his eye. "It is with a shattered heart that I must confirm the preliminary reports from the Coast Guard. At approximately two o’clock this morning, the *Seraphina*, carrying our beloved founder Julian Vance, his wife Evelyn, and his young daughter Clara, suffered a catastrophic engine room explosion sixty miles off the coast."

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Two board members buried their faces in their hands.

"The Coast Guard has recovered debris consistent with a total hull breach," Arthur continued, his voice steadying, adopting the cadence of a man shouldering an unbearable burden for the greater good. "While search and rescue operations remain nominally active, the depth of the trench and the severity of the blast leave... virtually zero probability of survivors."

Arthur paused, letting the silence weigh down upon the room.

"Julian was my brother in all but blood," Arthur said softly. "And Eleanor before him. But Vance Technologies represents more than one man. It represents the national security infrastructure of this country. Julian understood that. And that is why, in accordance with the corporate bylaws and the emergency succession protocols Julian himself drafted, the voting shares and the stewardship of the quantum encryption patents must now transition to a stabilized holding trust."

Arthur gestured toward a sleek black tablet sitting on the podium.

"I have here the digital authorization to execute the transfer of our assets to Ares Maritime, ensuring our contracts remain operational and uninterrupted. I ask the board to join me in ratifying this painful, but necessary, transition."

Arthur reached out his index finger to press the biometric scanner on the tablet.

*DING.*

The private elevator doors at the rear of the penthouse slid open with a chime that cut through the silence like a gunshot.

Arthur frowned, looking up in annoyance. "I specifically instructed security that this meeting was not to be interrup—"

The words died in his throat.

Julian Vance stepped out of the elevator.

He was dressed in a black tactical jacket, his face cut and bruised, his eyes burning with the lethal intensity of a ghost returning from hell. Flanking him were four heavily armed private security operators wearing unmarked tactical gear.

And dragged between them, her knees buckling, her hands zip-tied behind her back, was Evelyn Vance.

The room erupted into total chaos. Board members jumped from their seats, drinks shattering on the marble floor.

"Julian?!" one of the senior directors shouted. "My God! You're alive!"

Arthur Sterling’s face turned the color of curdled milk. His hand hovered over the podium, trembling violently. His eyes darted toward the private terrace doors, then toward his personal security guards stationed near the back.

But Marcus Kane’s men had already disarmed Arthur’s guards in the hallway.

"Don't move, Arthur," Julian said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed an authority so absolute that the entire room froze.

"Julian... this is... this is a miracle!" Arthur stammered, his polished facade instantly attempting to reassemble itself, though his voice cracked with panic. "We thought—the Coast Guard reported an explosion! Evelyn... what happened to you? Who did this to you?"

Julian walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, his boots clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble.

"Save the performance, Arthur," Julian said, stopping five feet from the podium. "The show is already over."

Julian pulled the encrypted flash drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the podium in front of Arthur.

"What is this?" Arthur whispered.

"That," Julian said, turning to look at the massive 100-inch presentation screen mounted on the wall behind the podium, "is the recording from the saloon camera you had installed for your Swiss buyers."

Julian tapped his smartwatch.

Instantly, the presentation screen flickered, overriding the corporate slide deck.

The audio roared through the boardroom’s high-fidelity surround-sound system:

*CRASH!*

On the massive screen, in pristine 4K resolution, Evelyn Vance’s face appeared, contorted in demonic rage as she hurled the teak chair at Julian and Clara.

Then came the audio, crystal-clear, echoing off the sixty-fourth-floor windows:

*"Why didn't you let her sink, Julian? Why do you always have to ruin everything?"*

*"You pushed her. You threw my baby into the ocean."*

*"She’s a parasite! Just like her mother was!... Eleanor was an auditor, Julian. Just a little adjustment to her morning potassium IV drip. Just a few milligrams of digitalis. And Clara saw it, didn't she? She had to go, Julian. And now, so do you."*

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Nobody breathed. Nobody moved.

Every eye was glued to the screen as the video showed the unedited, indisputable evidence of Eleanor’s murder, Clara’s attempted drowning, and the subsequent radio transmission where Arthur Sterling’s voice clearly discussed the offshore transfer, the scuttling charges, and the execution of the Vance family.

Arthur stood behind the podium, his mouth opening and closing like a fish suffocating on dry land. Sweat poured down his temples, ruining his thousand-dollar collar.

"It’s... it’s a deepfake," Arthur gasped, backing away from the podium, his hands raised in front of him. "Julian is manipulating the media! He’s trying to consolidate power! You all know me! You know I would never—"

"Federal agents! Nobody move!"

The heavy double doors of the main entrance burst open. A dozen tactical agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by naval intelligence officers and uniform Miami-Dade police, flooded the penthouse with rifles raised.

"Arthur Sterling! Evelyn Vance! On the ground! Now!"
