Chapter 3 - Whispers from the Deep

The lower companionway of the *Seraphina* was cloaked in dim red emergency lighting. Julian moved swiftly and silently down the carpeted corridor, his bare feet leaving damp tracks. Behind him, he heard the heavy thump of tactical boots hitting the saloon floor above, accompanied by the muffled, angry shouts of men speaking in sharp, clipped accents.

"Check the master stateroom! Don't let him reach the armory!" a gruff voice commanded from the top of the stairs.

Julian slipped into Clara’s bedroom, turning the deadbolt with a soft, practiced click. He carried her into the en-suite bathroom, set her down gently inside the oversized tiled shower stall, and grabbed three plush bath sheets from the warming rack, wrapping her shivering frame tightly.

Clara was trembling violently, her eyes wide, glassy with shock. Julian knelt before her, taking her small, icy face in his warm hands.

"Clara, look at me. Look at Daddy," he whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion he fought desperately to contain. "You have to be the bravest girl in the world right now. Can you do that for me?"

Clara nodded slowly, a single tear cutting through the dried sea salt on her cheek. "The bad woman... she pushed me, Daddy. She said Mommy was waiting for me at the bottom."

A knife twisted in Julian’s heart. He pulled her close, kissing her forehead. "Mommy is watching over us, but we are not going anywhere. Listen to me, baby. What you told Evelyn earlier... about the medicine bag. Did you see someone else in Mommy’s room that night?"

Clara sniffled, her tiny fingers clutching the lapel of Julian’s soaked shirt. "The man with the silver watch. The one who comes to the office with the papers. He gave Evelyn the little bottle. He told her... he told her Julian would never know."

Julian’s breath hitched. *The man with the silver watch.*

There was only one person in Julian’s inner circle who wore an antique, bespoke Patek Philippe with a cracked silver dial: Arthur Sterling. Julian’s chief financial officer, his mentor, and the man who had delivered the eulogy at Eleanor’s funeral.

The betrayal ran so deep that Julian felt physically nauseous. Arthur hadn't just embezzled funds; he had orchestrated Eleanor’s execution and placed Evelyn in Julian’s bed to control the empire from the inside out. Clara was the only loose thread in their pristine, murderous tapestry.

*Thump. Thump. Thump.*

Heavy footsteps paced the corridor outside Clara’s bedroom door. A shadow blocked the sliver of red light beneath the doorframe.

Julian reached beneath the bathroom vanity, his fingers finding the magnetic release latch on the hidden service panel. He popped the panel open, revealing a narrow crawlspace that housed the yacht’s gray-water plumbing and electrical conduits. It was cramped, filthy, and suffocating, but it led directly to the central utility chase behind the engine bulkhead.

"Clara," Julian whispered, lifting her carefully. "You need to crawl inside here. Crawl all the way to the back and stay completely quiet. No matter what you hear, no matter what happens, do not make a sound until I come get you."

"Don't leave me, Daddy," she whimpered, her lower lip quivering.

"I am right behind you, sweetie. But Daddy has to lock the door so they can't follow us. Go, now!"

Clara crawled into the dark cavity, her pink dress rustling against the fiberglass insulation. Julian pushed her blanket in after her, then carefully clicked the panel back into place, leaving it unlatched just enough so he could rip it open from the outside if needed.

Just as he stood up, the bedroom door outside gave a violent shudder.

*BANG!*

A boot heel slammed into the wood. The lock groaned.

*BANG!*

Julian scanned the bathroom. There were no weapons—only heavy marble soap dispensers and chrome fixtures. He grabbed a solid brass towel bar, braced his foot against the tiled wall, and wrenched it with all his strength. The anchors ripped free from the drywall with a sickening crunch, leaving him holding a three-foot bludgeon of solid metal.

*CRACK!*

The bedroom door gave way, splintering inward. Julian stepped out of the bathroom into the dark bedroom, flattening his back against the wall beside the doorway.

A flashlight beam pierced the gloom, illuminating the rumpled sheets of Clara’s bed. A man stepped across the threshold, dressed in black maritime tactical gear, a suppressed Glock 19 held in a low-ready position.

"Room's clear. Looks like they went through the emergency hatch," the man said into a shoulder-mounted radio.

Julian didn't wait. He stepped out from the blind spot and brought the brass bar down with every ounce of kinetic energy his body could generate.

The metal struck the side of the gunman’s tactical helmet with a hollow, concussive chime. The man stumbled, dazed, but didn't drop. He whipped the pistol around, his finger tightening on the trigger. Julian lunged inside the man’s guard, grabbing the slide of the gun with his left hand, forcing it upward just as a muffled *phut-phut* echoed in the confined space.

Two hollow-point rounds obliterated the plaster ceiling.

Julian drove his right elbow into the man’s throat, following with a vicious knee to the groin. The gunman wheezed, dropping the weapon. Julian grabbed the back of the man’s tactical vest and slammed his head repeatedly into the corner of the heavy oak nightstand until the body went entirely limp, slumping to the floor in a heap of dead weight.

Julian stood over the unconscious mercenary, his chest heaving, his hands slick with sweat and blood. He bent down, stripped the man’s tactical belt, took the suppressed Glock, three spare magazines, and the tactical radio.

As he checked the magazine, the radio crackled to life with a familiar, refined voice that sent ice through Julian’s veins.

"Team leader, report. Has the child been secured? Evelyn says Julian saw the camera. If the server feed leaks before the offshore transaction closes, none of us walk away from this."

Julian held the radio to his mouth, pressed the push-to-talk button, and spoke with terrifying, crystalline clarity.

"Arthur. I’m coming for you."
