Chapter 15 - Poison in the Champagne

Daniel’s Suburban tore through the estate gates at eighty miles per hour, throwing wet gravel fifty feet into the manicured hedges.

Arthur’s phone was glued to his ear, his voice rising in panic. "The private security channel is completely silent, Daniel! Base station isn't responding! The redundant fiber lines have been severed at the road!"

Daniel didn't wait for the car to come to a complete halt. He slammed the gear into park, kicked open his door, and drew his semi-automatic pistol from beneath his overcoat. Sarah was right behind him, her hands trembling as she pulled Leo’s carrier against her chest.

"Stay behind me, Sarah! Arthur, cover the east terrace!" Daniel yelled as he charged up the grand limestone steps toward the towering mahogany double doors of the mansion.

The doors were unlocked. They drifted open with an ominous, echoing creek.

Inside, the grand chandelier in the foyer was glowing at barely ten percent power, casting long, grotesque shadows across the marble floor. On the central dining table, where Daniel had left a magnum of vintage Dom Pérignon from the canceled baby shower, the bottle lay shattered. Two of Daniel’s personal security guards lay slumped across the mahogany chairs, their faces blue, foam dried around their lips.

"Cyanide aerosol," Arthur whispered from behind Daniel, pulling a tactical handkerchief over his nose. "Military grade. Daniel, this isn't corporate espionage anymore. This is a black-ops liquidation."

A blood-curdling scream echoed from the second floor.

*Emma.*

Daniel bounded up the spiral staircase three steps at a time, his heart hammering like a war drum. He reached the landing, kicked open the door to Emma’s bedroom with such force that the wood splintered off the frame.

What he saw stopped his breath.

Mrs. Gable had Emma pinned against the vanity table, her forearm pressed against the little girl's throat. The syringe was inches from Emma’s jugular. Emma was fighting like a feral cat, biting at the woman’s sleeve, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks.

"DROP IT!" Daniel roared, leveling the barrel of his Glock directly at the nanny’s forehead. "Let her go or I'll blow your skull across that wall!"

Mrs. Gable didn't flinch. Instead, she let out a dry, rattling laugh. "Shoot me, Daniel. Go on. Shoot me in front of her. But if my thumb depresses this plunger, five milligrams of potassium chloride goes straight into her carotid artery. She'll be dead before her body hits the floor."

"What do you want?" Daniel yelled, his hands rock-steady despite the agony in his chest. "Name the price! Whatever trust, whatever account—I will sign over the entire Sterling portfolio!"

"The portfolio?" Mrs. Gable sneered, her eyes gleaming with manic amusement. "You still think this is about money? You poor, blind bastard. Look at her, Daniel. Really look at her. Look at her green eyes. Clara never had green eyes. You never had green eyes."

Daniel froze.

"Victoria thought she was playing for the trust fund," Mrs. Gable continued, her voice dripping with venom. "Victoria was an idiot who thought a silicone belly and a forged birth certificate could buy her a seat at the high table. She didn't know that Emma was the real asset. Emma has been the key to the offshore vault since the day Clara bought her from the clinic in Zurich."

Before Daniel could process the words, a tiny hand moved.

Emma didn't cry out. With the cold, calculating instinct that had led her to pull the chair beneath Victoria at the baby shower, Emma reached down, grabbed a heavy brass paperweight from the vanity, and slammed it with all her strength into Mrs. Gable's kneecap.

The bone cracked with a sickening snap.

Mrs. Gable shrieked in agony, her grip slipping.

Daniel fired.

The silenced round took the nanny directly through the shoulder, spinning her around and throwing her against the glass balcony door, which shattered into a thousand glittering shards. Emma rolled across the floor into Daniel's outstretched arms. He snatched his daughter up, crushing her against his chest as the room filled with the smell of cordite.

On the floor, bleeding out on the broken glass, Mrs. Gable choked on her own blood, her dying eyes locking onto Daniel’s.

"She’s... coming..." the nanny gasped, a bloody smile spreading across her lips. "The real... mother... is already inside the house..."
