Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Penthouse

"Clear!"

*THUMP.*

The portable defibrillator delivered two hundred joules of electricity directly through Sarah Jenkins’s chest. Her body arched off the metal table, then dropped back down.

"Charge to three hundred!" Cole shouted, his hands working with frantic, mechanical precision. "Daniel, keep the ambu-bag pumping! Five seconds per breath! Don't stop!"

Daniel squeezed the blue rubber bag connected to Sarah’s airway, his eyes fixed on the flat green line tracing across the portable monitor. "Come on, Sarah," Daniel pleaded under his breath. "Fight. You didn't survive that monster just to die on this table. Fight for him!"

*THUMP.*

The second shock tore through her torso.

For three agonizing seconds, the machine continued its flat, endless screech. Then, with a jagged leap, the green line broke. A spike. Another spike. A steady, rhythmic beep returned to the room.

"Pulse is back," Cole exhaled, wiping sweat from his eyes with a bloody forearm. "Sinus rhythm. It’s weak, but she’s stabilizing. Team two has the medical extraction chopper hovering over the south field right now. We need to move her and the child immediately."

Within four minutes, Sarah and the newborn were secured inside specialized transport pods and rushed out through the rain toward the waiting Sikorsky medevac helicopter. Daniel stood in the mud of the clearing, the rotor wash whipping his clothes against his body, watching the aircraft lift into the gray morning sky.

"They're heading directly to Mount Sinai under armed escort," Vance said, walking up beside Daniel, holding an umbrella over his head. "I have the Chief of Surgery on standby. They will be placed in a private, locked ICU wing under twenty-four-hour armed guard. Nobody enters without my personal retina scan."

Daniel looked at his attorney. "And my son?"

"Safe, Daniel. He’s safe. You won."

"No," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register colder than the freezing rain. "I saved my son. Now I execute the monsters."

He turned and walked toward the second SUV. "Get in, Arthur. We have an appointment at the Sterling Tower."

The drive back to Manhattan took three hours. By 8:30 AM, the storm had passed, leaving behind a skyline of cold glass and brilliant, unfeeling sunlight. Traffic ground to a halt along 5th Avenue, but the Sterling convoy, flashing emergency contractor lights, cut through the gridlock like a scalpel.

The Sterling Shipping Tower rose eighty-four stories above Midtown—a monolithic obelisk of tinted glass and black titanium. It was the physical manifestation of three generations of ruthless business acumen.

At the summit sat the executive penthouse suite: a two-story glass palace overlooking Central Park, reserved exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer.

Daniel, accompanied by Vance and four of Cole’s armed operators in tailored three-piece suits, stepped out of the private express elevator directly into the marble foyer of the eighty-fourth floor.

The penthouse was eerily quiet.

Sitting at the end of a forty-foot mahogany conference table was his uncle, Marcus Sterling. Marcus was sixty-two, impeccably groomed in a Savile Row charcoal suit, sipping a double espresso while reviewing a stack of legal documents.

Beside him, standing by the panoramic window looking out over the park, was Vanessa.

She had changed into a stunning, backless crimson dress that hugged her slender figure like a second skin. Her platinum hair was swept up in an elaborate chignon, secured with diamond pins. She held a crystal flute of mimosa in one hand, radiating the absolute, supreme confidence of a woman who believed she had successfully conquered the world.

When the elevator doors chimed, neither of them looked alarmed. In fact, Marcus smiled—a warm, benevolent, utterly sickening smile.

"Ah, the conquering hero returns," Marcus said, setting his espresso cup down with a delicate clink. "We were wondering when you’d show up, nephew. You look dreadful. A bit muddy around the cuffs. Not very executive."

Vanessa turned around, her blue eyes sparkling with amused condescension. "Did you enjoy your little scavenger hunt in the woods, Daniel? I assume you found Dr. Mercer. A clumsy man, but useful when properly motivated."

Daniel walked slowly toward the table, stopping ten feet away. Cole’s men fanned out behind him, silently securing the exits.

"The baby is alive, Vanessa," Daniel said quietly. "Sarah Jenkins is alive. They are at Mount Sinai."

Vanessa didn't even flinch. She took a slow, leisurely sip of her mimosa.

"Of course they are, darling," she said, her voice dripping with pity. "Did you really think I cared whether that pathetic little farm girl lived or died? Did you think I cared about the physical child? The child was simply the lever, Daniel. He served his purpose the moment his genetic material was verified by the clinic’s laboratory."

Marcus leaned forward, tapping the documents on the table with a gold fountain pen.

"Here is the reality of your situation, Daniel," Marcus explained in a calm, grandfatherly tone. "While you were playing commando in the mud, our legal team filed an emergency motion with the probate court. We presented the signed affidavits from Dr. Mercer, along with the clinic’s original intake logs. According to the state of New York, that child was conceived through unauthorized commercial surrogacy using stolen intellectual property from the Sterling Corporation’s private medical research accounts."

"What are you talking about?" Vance stepped forward, his legal instincts firing. "That is his biological son!"

"He is an undocumented infant born of a criminal conspiracy," Marcus countered smoothly. "And because Daniel failed to produce a child through a *legally recognized, domestic spousal birth* prior to his thirty-fifth birthday—which, by the way, the board of directors has voted to move the verification deadline to 9:00 AM this morning—the Bloodline Contingency has officially lapsed."

Marcus pushed the document toward the empty chair opposite him.

"You are out, Daniel. As of five minutes ago, the board approved my appointment as interim Chairman and CEO. Vanessa, as your legally wedded wife who has officially filed for an emergency domestic protective order, has been granted temporary receivership of 50% of your personal liquid assets."

Vanessa walked over, standing directly behind Marcus, resting her manicured hands on the back of his leather chair. She looked at Daniel with pure, unadulterated triumph.

"You played the hero, Daniel," she whispered, her voice a purr of venomous delight. "And heroes always end up with nothing. Sign the surrender of voting shares. If you do, Marcus and I might let you keep enough of a trust fund to raise your little bastard in an apartment in Queens. If you refuse... we release the surveillance footage of your private security raiding the Plattsburgh facility. We claim you murdered Dr. Mercer, kidnapped the child, and you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."

Daniel looked from Marcus to Vanessa.

May you like

Then, for the first time in twenty-four hours, Daniel Sterling began to laugh.
