Chapter 4 - What Emma Knew

The grandfather clock in the central hallway struck 1:00 AM.

The heavy rain outside had evolved into a full-blown northeastern gale, whipping the bare branches of the oak trees against the stained-glass windows of the third floor. Daniel stood outside his daughter’s bedroom door, holding the thin medical dossier in his trembling hands.

He raised his hand to knock, hesitated, and then gently turned the brass handle.

The door swung open with a faint creak. The nightlight, shaped like a glowing ceramic crescent moon, cast long, soft shadows across the lavender walls. Emma was not asleep. She was sitting cross-legged in the middle of her bed, her arms wrapped around a worn teddy bear that had belonged to her biological mother. Her wide, watchful eyes fixed on Daniel the moment he crossed the threshold.

"Did you make her go away forever, Daddy?" Emma’s voice was small, cutting through the silence with heartbreaking clarity.

Daniel felt a crushing weight drop onto his chest. He closed the door behind him, walked over to the edge of the bed, and sat down. He set the dossier aside, reached out, and pulled his daughter into his arms. She was so small, so fragile, yet she had been the only person in an estate filled with bodyguards and lawyers who had possessed the courage to see the truth.

"She’s gone, baby," Daniel whispered into her hair, kissing her forehead. "She’s never coming back into this house. Never."

Emma didn't cry. Instead, she leaned back and looked up into his face with an intensity that seemed far too mature for an eight-year-old. "You're sad because of the rubber tummy. You thought there was a baby brother in there."

Daniel swallowed the lump of burning bile in his throat. "Emma... how did you know? Why did you pull that chair away today?"

Emma looked down at her teddy bear, her small fingers twisting its plush ear. "It wasn't just the vodka, Daddy. Three weeks ago, when you were in London for the shipping summit, I woke up because I had a nightmare about Mommy. I went down to the kitchen to get warm milk."

Daniel held his breath, listening to every syllable.

"The kitchen light was off, but the door to the wine cellar was open," Emma continued, her voice trembling slightly. "Vanessa was down there. She was talking on that little silver phone she never lets you see. She was angry. Really angry."

"What did she say, sweetheart? Try to remember the exact words."

"She said... *'The girl is getting suspicious. She looks at me like she knows.'* And then she laughed, but it wasn't a happy laugh. It sounded like a witch. She said, *'It doesn't matter anyway. In three weeks, the surrogate in Plattsburgh delivers the boy. Once the boy is in my custody, Daniel’s signature on the family trust doesn't mean anything. We stage an accidental drowning at the Hamptons estate, Daniel dies, the infant inherits 100%, and I become the sole legal executor.'*"

The air rushed out of Daniel’s lungs as if he had been struck by a locomotive.

It wasn't just a fraud to keep the company. It wasn't just an extortion scheme.

It was a murder plot.

Vanessa wasn't planning on sharing the Sterling empire with him. She was going to use his biological son as an instrument to usurp the entire estate, liquidate the assets, and eliminate Daniel entirely once the infant’s legal birth certificate was filed with the state of New York.

"There was more, Daddy," Emma whispered, tears finally welling up in her large hazel eyes. "The man on the other end of the phone... she called him by his name."

Daniel leaned closer, his heart slamming against his ribs like a caged beast. "Who was it, Emma? Who was she talking to?"

"She called him Uncle Marcus."

Daniel closed his eyes. The room seemed to tilt beneath him.

Marcus Sterling. His father’s younger brother. The man who had spent the last twenty years contesting Arthur Sterling’s will, the man who had been cast out of the family firm after being caught embezzling thirty million dollars from the European logistics division.

Marcus hadn't been an external threat trying to take advantage of the situation. Marcus had been the architect from day one. He had recruited Vanessa, manufactured her identity, placed her in Daniel’s path, and orchestrated the theft of the genetic material from the Boston fertility clinic. They were going to kill Daniel, claim the boy as the sole legal heir, and Marcus would control the board through Vanessa’s guardianship.

"Daddy?" Emma’s small hand reached out and touched his cheek. "Are you going to die like Mommy did?"

Daniel snapped his eyes open. The grief, the betrayal, the paralyzing shock that had crippled him for the last six hours vanished in a single, blazing second. It was incinerated by an overwhelming, primal instinct to protect his flesh and blood.

He pulled Emma tight against his chest, his voice dropping into a register of iron and steel.

"No, Emma. Nobody is going to die. Not me, and not your little brother."

He kissed her hair once more, stood up, and grabbed the medical dossier from the bed. He walked to the door, paused, and looked back at his daughter.

"Emma, you saved my life today. You remember that. Now go to sleep. When you wake up, Daddy is going to have this finished."

Daniel walked out into the corridor and pulled his phone from his pocket. He dialed Arthur Vance. The lawyer answered on the first ring.

"Arthur," Daniel said, his voice flat, deadly, and entirely calm. "Forget the board of directors. Forget the morning stock prices. Marcus is behind the entire operation. They're planning an assassination once the child is delivered."

A sharp intake of breath came over the encrypted line. "My God. What are our orders, Daniel?"

"Call Thomas Cole," Daniel ordered.

Cole was the head of Sterling Maritime’s private tactical security—a retired Navy SEAL commander who managed security for their high-risk shipping routes through the Gulf of Aden.

"Tell Cole to mobilize six men, non-attributable gear, and two unmarked SUVs at the private hangar at Teterboro," Daniel commanded. "We aren't waiting forty-eight hours for Vanessa’s deadline. We're going to Plattsburgh tonight. We're getting my son back."
