Chapter 11 - The Phantom in the Floorboards

The salt air of Blackwood Point faded into the stifling, chlorinated stillness of the Boston townhouse. It was supposed to be a sanctuary, a heavily guarded redoubt nestled behind wrought-iron gates in Beacon Hill, completely scrubbed of Eleanor’s presence. Arthur had paid cash. He had hired an independent security firm with ex-Mossad credentials to sweep every square inch for bugs, micro-lenses, and tracking beacons.
Yet, as the grandfather clock chimed midnight, the silence felt rancid.
Arthur sat at the edge of the kitchen island, his knuckles raw and white around a tumbler of bourbon he hadn't tasted. His cracked ribs throbbed with every shallow breath—a brutal souvenir from the cliffside brawl. Down the hall, the nursery door stood cracked open an inch. A faint golden glow from the nightlight spilled onto the dark parquet floor.
Then came the sound.
*Tap. Tap. Scrape.*
Arthur’s spine turned to solid ice. He set the glass down without making a sound, his hand immediately dropping to the holster concealed beneath his untucked flannel shirt. His fingers wrapped around the checkered grip of his Sig Sauer. He rose slowly, keeping his boots flat against the floorboards, avoiding the seams where the antique wood might groan.
*Tap. Tap. Scrape.*
It was coming from Lily’s nursery.
Arthur reached the door in three silent strides, his heart hammering against his bruised ribs like a caged beast. He eased the door inward. The hinges had been oiled that very morning, but to Arthur's hyper-alert ears, they sounded like screaming metal.
One-year-old Lily wasn’t in her crib.
The white crib sheets were tangled, tossed aside like discarded bandages. Arthur’s stomach plunged into an abyss of pure terror. Then he saw her. The tiny girl was sitting in the darkest corner of the room, her back pressed against the skirting board, wearing her faded yellow footie pajamas. Her tiny knees were pulled to her chest, her thumb jammed into her mouth, her oversized hazel eyes locked onto the cast-iron heating vent on the floor.
"Lily..." Arthur exhaled in a ragged whisper, dropping to one knee beside her. "Baby, what are you doing out of bed?"
He reached to scoop her up, but the moment his fingers touched her shoulder, Lily flinched violently. It wasn't the startled reflex of an infant; it was the learned, institutional terror of a prisoner. She pulled her thumb from her mouth and pointed a trembling, dimpled finger straight down at the heavy brass grate of the vent.
"Down," she whimpered, her voice raspy, barely audible over the hum of the central heating. "The red lady... eyes open."
Arthur froze. "What did you say, sweetheart?"
Lily tilted her head, her eyes wide, glassy with unspeakable dread. "Red lady in the floor. She say Lily be quiet... or the candle burns."
The wooden candlestick. Eleanor’s weapon of choice. The heavy mahogany club Eleanor had used to chase this baby down the stairs before Arthur had thrown her into the Atlantic.
Arthur's blood turned to liquid nitrogen. He picked Lily up with his left arm, holding her small body tight against his chest, while his right hand leveled the pistol directly at the brass floor grate. The screws holding the vent in place were pristine. Painted shut.
Arthur leaned in closer, his flashlight clicking on. The sharp LED beam pierced the gloom of the ductwork. Dust motes drifted in the beam. For five feet, there was nothing but galvanized steel.
And then the light caught something reflecting in the darkness.
Wedged twelve inches down into the shaft was a Polaroid photograph, fresh and glossy. Arthur carefully slid his fingers through the slats, wincing as the iron dug into his skin, and pulled the photograph free.
His breath stopped in his throat.
The photo had been taken from inside the vent, pointing upward into the nursery. In the center of the frame was Lily sleeping peacefully in her crib—taken no more than two hours ago. Written across the white border at the bottom in jagged, fresh crimson lipstick were four words:
