Chapter 14 - The Butcher of Beacon Hill

Arthur tore through the rain-slicked streets of Lowell in an armored Suburban, his teeth ground down to the nerve. His phone sat on the center console, running a real-time biometric scan of the safe house's vital signs.
A red warning flashed on the screen: *INTERIOR PRESSURE DROP DETECTED. SECTOR 4.*
"No, no, no," Arthur roared, slamming his palm against the steering wheel. He floored the accelerator, the V8 engine screaming as the massive SUV blew through a red light at seventy miles per hour.
Miller’s words echoed in his skull like a death knell: *They aren't coming for your money. They're coming to wipe the bloodline off the map.*
Ten minutes later, the Suburban violently fishtailed into the gravel lot of the textile mill. Arthur kicked his door open before the vehicle had even fully stopped, his tactical shotgun leveled at his hip, rain blinding his vision as he sprinted toward the subterranean entrance.
The outer blast door had not been blown with explosives. It had been opened with the six-digit digital bypass code—a code that only Arthur and one other person had ever possessed.
Julian Sterling.
Julian, his corporate attorney. Sarah’s second cousin. The man who had stood by Arthur’s side at Sarah's funeral, holding Arthur up when his legs had given out over the open grave.
"Julian, you son of a bitch," Arthur growled through clenched teeth.
Arthur entered the concrete bunker. The smell hit him instantly: ozone, burned copper, and the unmistakable metallic stench of fresh blood.
"Leo!" Arthur yelled, discarding all stealth, rushing down the narrow concrete hallway. "Lily!"
He burst into the main living quarters.
The sight made his knees buckle.
Two armed private security contractors in black tactical gear lay dead on the concrete floor, their throats cut with surgical precision. But they hadn't been killed by Eleanor.
Standing in the center of the room was a man Arthur had known for twenty years. Julian Sterling wore a tailored charcoal suit beneath a clear plastic raincoat, completely unbothered by the carnage around him. He was calmly wiping a ceramic combat knife with a silk handkerchief.
Sitting on the floor behind Julian was Leo, his arms wrapped around Lily, shielding her face from the bodies. Leo was clutching a kitchen knife with white-knuckled desperation, his eyes blazing with a mixture of terror and defiance.
"Arthur," Julian said smoothly, sliding the clean knife into an inner breast pocket. "You're late. Eleanor’s strike team was already inside the perimeter. I had to eliminate them myself."
Arthur kept the barrel of the 12-gauge pointed squarely between Julian’s eyes.
"How did you know the bypass code, Julian?" Arthur’s voice was dead, stripped of all humanity. "I set that code four hours ago on a private terminal."
Julian sighed, adjusting his silver cufflinks. "Arthur, who do you think built this bunker? Who do you think financed Eleanor’s little psychiatric breakdown at Blackwood Point? Did you really believe a middle-class sociopath like Eleanor had the intelligence to orchestrate Sarah’s slow poisoning, forge the deed to the Vance shipping terminals, and bypass state surveillance?"
Julian took half a step forward. Arthur cocked the shotgun with a deafening *clack-clack*.
"Don't move," Arthur warned. "Not one inch."

Julian only smiled—a cold, reptilian curving of his lips. "Shoot me, Arthur, and you'll never find out which of the children is carrying the lethal dose."
