Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

Arthur did not look at Reyes. He kept his eyes locked dead onto Claire’s pupils, knowing that any shift in his gaze would trigger the reflex of a seasoned killer.
"You're right, Claire," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a flat, defeatist monotone. He slowly lowered the barrel of the shotgun by an inch. "I was blind. I was weak. But Harrison won't let you walk away from this either. You know how he operates. The moment I’m dead, you’re loose thread."
Claire’s eyes flickered with a micro-second of irritation. "Harrison is an accountant with an ego. I have his offshore keys. I have the recordings of him authorizing the sabotage of Sarah’s boat. He does what I tell him, or he joins you."
"Good to know," Detective Reyes said from four feet behind her. "That makes the federal conspiracy charge a slam dunk."
Claire spun on her heel, firing her pistol on pure muscle memory.
*Crack-crack!*
The two rounds caught Reyes in the shoulder and side, throwing him violently backward into the hallway wall. But the detective didn't go down without firing. His service Glock barked twice.
The first bullet clipped Claire’s right elbow, shattering the joint and sending her pistol spinning across the wet floorboards. The second round struck the side of her tactical vest, grazing the outer housing of the thermite detonator.
The LED flashed wildly from green to amber.
Claire let out a feral shriek of pain and rage. Instead of retreating, she lunged at Arthur with a ceramic trench knife drawn from her boot with her left hand.
Arthur dropped the shotgun. He didn't want to risk an accidental discharge hitting the detonator on her chest. As she slashed the blade toward his throat, he ducked inside her guard, catching her wrist with his forearm.
The momentum carried them both through the shattered bedroom doors and out onto the open mezzanine balcony.
Beneath them, the great hall was an inferno. Harrison Brooks stood near the front entrance, holding a tactical carbine, shouting orders to a surviving mercenary near the kitchen.
"Claire! Did you find the vault keys?" Harrison yelled upward, his voice competing with the roar of the fire.
Arthur drove his elbow hard into Claire’s fractured temple. She staggered back against the splintered balustrade, coughing blood onto the floor, but her left hand remained locked around the hilt of the blade.
"Harrison!" Claire spat, her voice thick with blood. "He knows! He knows about the accounts!"
Harrison’s eyes locked onto Arthur standing on the edge of the balcony. The mask of the polished, Ivy League executive cracked completely, revealing the cold, sociopathic greed beneath.
"Kill them both," Harrison shouted to the mercenary beside him. "Blow the house! Blow it now!"
The mercenary reached for a heavy detonator console sitting on the bar.
Before his fingers could touch the toggle, the kitchen vault door swung open with a deafening screech of steel.
Keller stepped out. The ex-marine didn't hesitate. From the hip, he unleashed a continuous, devastating burst from a customized squad automatic weapon he had retrieved from the armory inside the bunker.
The mercenary was lifted off his feet, shredded by heavy-caliber rounds, and crashed through the plate-glass window into the storm outside. Harrison dropped his carbine and dove frantically behind the stone hearth, screaming in terror.
Up on the mezzanine, Claire lunged one last time.
She didn't aim the knife at Arthur’s heart. She aimed it down at her own chest—at the flashing amber detonator.

"We all burn, Arthur!" she screamed, her face twisted into a mask of pure, apocalyptic madness. "We all burn together!"
