Chapter 18 - Blood in the Foundation

"Eleanor, wait!" Arthur roared, throwing his entire weight forward, slamming his forehead into her shin.

Eleanor stumbled backward with a screech of rage, dropping the candlestick onto the stones. Arthur rolled onto his back, bringing his bound hands beneath his legs, slipping his wrists under his feet until his hands were in front of him.

He didn't try to break the zip ties. He lunged straight for the fallen candlestick.

He wrapped his bloody fingers around the heavy mahogany wood.

Eleanor recovered, pulling a nickel-plated revolver from her coat pocket. "Die, Vance!"

"Dad, duck!" Leo screamed.

Leo didn't hesitate. The eleven-year-old boy, who had spent eighteen months shivering in the corner of dark rooms, launched himself across the vault floor, slamming his entire small body into Eleanor's knees.

The gun fired.

*BANG!*

The bullet shattered a gas lamp on the wall, raining burning kerosene down across the antique rugs. Flames instantly erupted, licking the stone walls and spreading toward the stacks of dry legal files.

Eleanor fell heavily onto the stone floor, her head striking the corner of the mahogany desk. She groaned, reaching frantically for the fallen revolver.

Arthur didn't give her the chance.

Rising from the floor, his hands still bound together, Arthur raised the wooden candlestick with both arms—the very weapon that had terrorized his children, that had chased his baby daughter to the edge of the stairs—and brought it down with catastrophic force across Eleanor’s wrist.

The sound of shattering bone echoed through the vault.

Eleanor shrieked in agony as the gun spun out of her ruined fingers, sliding into the growing wall of fire.

Arthur stood over her, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with the cold, absolute finality of an executioner. "This ends now."

Eleanor, clutching her broken wrist, stared up at him through the smoke and flames, laughing hysterically. "Kill me, Arthur! Kill me! It won't save her! The antidote... Julian has it! In less than one hour, your daughter’s blood will turn to poison, and there's nothing you can do to stop him!"

Arthur didn't strike her again. He turned toward his children.

"Leo! Grab Lily! Now!"

Leo scooped his sister into his arms, wrapping his jacket over her face to shield her from the smoke. Arthur grabbed a heavy iron fire poker from the hearth, using the sharp edge to wedge into the zip ties between his wrists, throwing all his weight against it until the plastic snapped with a violent pop.

He scooped both of his children into his arms, kicking open the iron grate that led to the old coal chute beneath the manor.

Behind them, Eleanor Vance lay laughing in the growing inferno as the flames consumed the room.
