Chapter 13 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The tires of Evelyn’s SUV screamed against the asphalt as she hurled the vehicle up the winding, tree-lined private drive of the Bennett estate.
The security perimeter had failed.
The heavy wrought-iron security gates had not been unlocked—they had been sheared completely off their stone pillars by hydraulic cutters, left twisted in the snow like broken bones.
"Dad!" Evelyn roared, kicking her car door open before the engine had even stopped. She drew the small Glock 19 Daniel had insisted she carry after Celeste’s trial, racking the slide with a clean, practiced snap.
The front entrance of the mansion was wide open. The winter wind was howling through the foyer, scattering papers, family portraits, and shattered chandelier crystals across the white Italian marble where Celeste had once dripped her fake tears.
"Dad! Lily!"
A groaning sound came from behind the overturned mahogany sideboard in the formal dining room.
Evelyn rushed forward, her gun lowered. Daniel was sprawled on his side, his face covered in blood, his hands clutching a shattered silver candlestick. Three private security guards hired from Manhattan lay unconscious across the Persian rugs, zip-tied, their tactical radios crushed beneath combat boots.
"Evie..." Daniel gasped, coughing violently, crimson spattering his collar. "The nursery... three men in tactical gear... military flashbangs... they knew the panic room code..."
Evelyn didn't wait. She took the grand staircase three steps at a time, the smell of ozone and burnt magnesium burning her nostrils.
The heavy oak door to Lily’s nursery was hanging by a single hinge, splintered into matchwood.
Inside, the crib was empty.
Lily’s hand-knitted white Christmas blanket—the one Sarah had made before she took her last breath—lay discarded in the middle of the room, marked with the muddy tread of a combat boot. Beside the crib, a small digital timer blinked in crimson digits on the bedside table, attached to a compact magnetic hard drive.
A recorded synthesized voice crackled through the drive's miniature speaker:
*"Miss Bennett. Forty-eight hours. The Zurich vault safety deposit box #804 contains the decoding enzyme. Bring it to the abandoned industrial docks at Pier 54, Brooklyn. Come alone, or the child’s bone marrow will be harvested cell by agonizing cell."*
The timer began to tick backward from 47:59:59.
Daniel stumbled into the room, leaning heavily against the doorframe, his face white as chalk as he saw the empty crib. "They... they took my baby..."

"No," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a deadly, razor-sharp calm that terrified even her father. She picked up Lily's blanket, clutching it tightly against her chest before folding it into her leather jacket. "They stole Julian Vance’s death sentence. And I’m going to make sure he dies before he touches a single hair on her head."
