Chapter 18 - Secrets in the Ash

Two days later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation had sealed every asset belonging to Vance-BioTech across three continents.
Celeste, confronted with Vance’s death and the total seizure of the offshore accounts she had been promised, suffered a complete psychological breakdown in her solitary cell, screaming at the walls that Sarah Bennett was still haunting the corridors of power.
Back at the Hudson Valley estate, the afternoon sun cast long, peaceful shadows across the reconstructed conservatory.
Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, but the lead investigator who had coordinated Daniel's rescue operation—sat across from Daniel and Evelyn at the dining table. A manila file marked *TOP SECRET / DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE* rested between them.
"We finished processing the data recovered from the Zurich laptop," Agent Marcus said, his voice measured and serious. "Sarah’s enzyme wasn't just a defensive biological trigger. It was a complete sequencing map for treating aggressive neurodegenerative conditions. The federal government has classified the technology, but the patent has been officially transferred to the Sarah Bennett Memorial Foundation."
Daniel touched Evelyn’s hand. "It’s over, Marcus. The money, the patents... we don't care about any of it. We just want to raise our daughters in peace."
Marcus hesitated. His eyes shifted from Daniel to Evelyn, a flicker of deep, unsettled hesitation crossing his weathered face.
"There's something else, Daniel," Marcus said quietly.
Evelyn sat upright, her instincts flaring instantly. "What did you find?"
Marcus pulled a high-resolution forensic photograph from the file and slid it across the table.
It was a photograph of the crash site in the Swiss Alps where Sarah Bennett’s medical transport helicopter had allegedly gone down three years ago—the crash that supposedly left behind only dental records and ash.
"We re-examined the dental fragments from the crash with advanced DNA PCR amplification," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "The teeth recovered from that cockpit... they didn't belong to Sarah Bennett."
Daniel’s face drained of all color. "What are you saying?"
"The blood in the vial delivered to your house yesterday," Marcus continued, his eyes locked onto Evelyn. "The lab ran a full cellular decay analysis. Blood decomposes, even in climate-controlled vials. That blood wasn't drawn three years ago."
Marcus paused.

"That blood was drawn less than seventy-two hours ago. From a living donor."
