Chapter 6 - The Poisoner's Shadow

Outside, the blizzard hit its peak. A tremendous crack echoed through the estate grounds as an ancient oak tree succumbed to the weight of the ice, crashing down across the power lines near the front gate.

Instantly, the estate plunged into total, suffocating darkness.

The chandeliers died. The hum of the climate control ceased, replaced by the hollow howl of the sub-zero gale rattling the structural steel of the mansion.

Lily screamed in the pitch black.

"Lily! Evelyn!" Daniel’s voice boomed through the gloom.

A fraction of a second later, the mansion’s emergency backup system engaged with a low, mechanical thrum. Amber security lights flickered to life along the perimeter baseboards, casting long, grotesque shadows across the cavernous foyer.

In that momentary lapse of darkness, Vivian had made her move. She had bolted toward the heavy mahogany front doors, desperate to escape into the blinding snow. But the electronic locks had engaged with the power drop, their pneumatic bolts locking down automatically. She threw herself against the bronze handles, weeping hysterically.

"Let me out! Let me out, Celeste! You told me nobody would look at the Cayman accounts! You swore Daniel would never audit the secondary shell companies!"

Celeste didn't look at Vivian. She didn't look at Daniel.

In the amber gloom, Celeste had moved to the decorative suit of antique armor standing beside the drawing room archway. Her fingers closed around the handle of a short hunting blade—a ceremonial Damascus steel dagger Sarah’s father had brought back from Europe sixty years ago.

"Vivian, shut your worthless mouth," Celeste commanded, stepping back into the center of the foyer, the steel blade gleaming dull orange in the emergency light. "Nobody is leaving this house. The storm has cut the roads. The private security team isn't scheduled to rotate until 8:00 AM tomorrow. We have eight hours, Daniel. Eight hours before anyone from the outside world can set foot on this mountain."

Daniel shifted Lily behind his back, positioning his six-foot-two frame directly in front of Evelyn. His voice was deathly calm. "Put the knife down, Celeste. The local sheriff has my direct emergency satellite frequency. If I don't check in every two hours, tactical units breach the gate."

"Don't lie to me!" Celeste shrieked, her voice bouncing violently off the limestone walls. "I went through your communications log yesterday! You turned off the satellite relays because you wanted an uninterrupted holiday with your perfect little daughters! There is no sheriff coming. There are no tactical units. There is only you, me, and the fact that if all three of you die of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty chimney flue tonight, I inherit eighty-five percent of the Bennett Estate as your surviving widow!"

"You're insane," Evelyn said, stepping out from behind her father, her eyes burning. "You think you can murder three people and walk away with an empire?"

"I already murdered one," Celeste hissed, a terrifying smile spreading across her cracked lipstick. "And you spent fourteen months putting flowers on her grave without ever suspecting a thing. Sarah was smarter than all of you, and she still died choking on her own saliva while I adjusted her pillows."

Daniel’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek. "You killed Sarah."

"She was in the way, Daniel! Just like Evelyn is in the way now! Just like that screeching little brat behind you is in the way!"

Celeste lunged forward with shocking speed.

She didn't aim for Daniel. She knew Daniel was too large, too powerful. She dove toward Evelyn, the hunting blade slashing diagonally through the air, aimed directly at Evelyn’s throat.

Daniel moved with the instinct of a father whose family had already been decimated once. He thrust his left forearm up, taking the brunt of the blade. The Damascus steel sliced through his heavy cashmere coat and deep into the flesh of his forearm.

Blood—hot, bright crimson—splattered across the white marble floor.

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't cry out. He used his immense weight to slam his shoulder straight into Celeste’s chest, lifting her off her feet and throwing her violently across the foyer.

Celeste slammed into the heavy oak display console, shattering a crystal vase into a thousand glittering shards. The dagger slipped from her grip, skittering across the floor toward the dark drawing room.

"Evelyn! Take Lily!" Daniel roared, gripping his bleeding forearm, his face pale under the amber security lights. "Get into the security vault in the basement! The keycode is Sarah’s birthday! Go! Now!"

"Dad, no! I’m not leaving you!" Evelyn cried, clutching the metal box against her ribs.

"Go, Evie!" Daniel yelled, turning to face Celeste as the woman scrambled frantically through the broken crystal, her bloody fingers searching for the fallen blade. "Protect your sister! I am not losing another daughter to this monster!"
