Chapter 16 - Hellfire in the Operating Theater

*BANG! BANG!*
A blinding white flash turned the warehouse interior into an incinerating sun, followed instantly by a deafening 170-decibel concussion blast that sent the armed mercenaries crashing to the concrete floor, clutching their bleeding ears.
Before the smoke could even spread, Evelyn swung down through the shattered skylight on a tactical rappel line.
Her boots struck the first mercenary’s chest, driving him into the concrete with a sickening crack. Without breaking momentum, she unholstered her sidearm and fired three controlled double-taps.
*Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!*
The remaining two guards collapsed, their weapons clattering across the floor.
The doctor dropped the extraction needle, screaming as she scrambled behind a bank of server monitors.
Julian Vance shrieked through his robotic vocalizer, desperately trying to reverse his motorized wheelchair, but Evelyn had already bridged the gap. She seized the steel handle of his life-support console, slamming her combat knife directly into the machine's battery junction. Sparks erupted in a violent shower, freezing the wheelchair in place.
"Don't move," Evelyn hissed, the barrel of her Glock pressed against Vance’s sunken temple.
"You... Bennett’s whelp..." Vance wheezed, spit flying from his withered lips. "You think you’ve won? The entire perimeter is surrounded by fifty private contractors. You will never walk out of this harbor alive!"
"Evie!" a tiny, terrified voice cried out.
Evelyn’s eyes flickered to the bed. Lily was sobbing, reaching her chubby arms toward her older sister.
"I'm here, baby," Evelyn whispered, keeping the gun pinned to Vance’s skull as she quickly unclipped the IV line with one hand, wrapping Lily securely into a tactical chest harness strapped against her ribs. Lily buried her wet face into Evelyn’s neck, clutching her jacket with tiny, trembling fists.
"You take the child, you take my life," Vance snarled, his milky eyes burning with dying fury. "Give me the decoding enzyme, Evelyn! I have billions! I will buy you immunity! I will wipe out Celeste's entire testimony!"
"My mother left you an enzyme, Vance," Evelyn whispered, pulling the Zurich laptop from her pack and jamming the interface cable into his medical console. "She just didn't tell you what it cures."
Evelyn pressed *EXECUTE*.
The medical monitors flashed crimson. A high-pitched alarm screamed through the warehouse.
*OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. SELF-DESTRUCT PROTOCOL INITIALIZED. FACILITY PURGE IN 180 SECONDS.*
"No! NO!" Vance screamed, his hands clawing at the controls as the hydraulic fuel lines in the warehouse began to vent pressurized gas into the air.

Evelyn turned and sprinted toward the loading docks, Lily strapped securely to her chest.
