Chapter 13 - The Autopsy of a Ghost

The silence in the fortified living room was suffocating. Elena instinctively backed away from the console table, pulling Lily closer against her chest, her protective instincts flaring like white-hot metal.
Julian did not move for several agonizing seconds. His eyes bored into the crimson envelope as if expecting it to detonate. The wax seal—the Ouroboros, the serpent devouring its own tail—was not Sarah’s crest. It was the personal seal of the *Hermes Syndicate*, an ultra-exclusive, shadowy consortium of European pharmaceutical magnates and private mercenary outfits that Julian had spent five years systematically destroying in the global markets.
With gloved hands, Julian picked up the envelope. Using a tactical pocketknife, he slit the top edge and shook out a single sheet of heavy parchment and a cold, metallic thumb drive.
The parchment carried handwriting written in flowing, elegant black calligraphy. He recognized the script instantly. It was Sarah’s hand. He had read dozens of love letters written in that exact slant during their courtship in Zurich.
*“My beloved Julian,*
*You always played chess with people as if they were pawns, never realizing that the board was designed by someone far more patient than you. You thought Victoria was the monster? Poor, foolish Victoria. She was merely an amateur playing with petty jealousy and baby formulas. She was never the architect. She was the decoy.*
*If you want to know what truly happened the night the ambulance carried away a mangled body in my clothes, look at the files on this drive. And remember this: Lily was never meant to be your daughter. She was designed to be our legacy.*
*Tick-tock, Julian. The vault is opening.”*
Julian felt a violent nausea churn in the pit of his stomach. "Decoy?" he whispered.
"Julian, let me take Lily upstairs," Elena urged, her voice trembling slightly. "Please. She shouldn't be here for this."
"Take her to the safe room in the basement," Julian ordered, his tone devoid of all warmth, reduced to pure tactical calculation. "Marcus has two men standing by the blast door. Lock yourself inside from the interior panel. Do not open it for anyone. Not even me, unless you hear the duress code."
"What is the code?" Elena asked, looking straight into his cold, gray eyes.
"Sarah's grave," Julian said coldly.
Elena swallowed hard, nodded, and carried the restless child down the reinforced spiral staircase leading to the subterranean bunker. The heavy steel door sealed shut with a pneumatic hiss, leaving Julian completely alone with the ghosts of his past.
Julian inserted the encrypted thumb drive into an air-gapped laptop, isolated from any external network. His fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the proprietary decryption layers using brute-force algorithms developed by his cyber-security teams.
The screen flashed red, then unspooled dozens of high-resolution digital documents.
The first was a coroners report from the night of Sarah’s fatal accident—dated two years ago. But this was not the official report issued by the New York Medical Examiner. This document was stamped with the insignia of *St. Jude’s Black-Site Clinic* in upstate New York, an off-the-books surgical facility catering to international oligarchs.
Julian scrolled down, his breath hitching.
The body pulled from the flaming wreckage of Sarah’s Mercedes was not Sarah Vance. The dental records had been falsified using extracted teeth from an unidentified Jane Doe. The blood type was mismatched. And listed under the primary attending surgeon’s signature was a name that made Julian’s blood run cold:
*Dr. Alistair Sterling.*
Victoria’s estranged older brother. The brilliant, sociopathic neurosurgeon who had allegedly stripped his medical license and vanished into Eastern Europe six years ago after a scandal involving unauthorized human genetic research.
Victoria had not acted alone. Her obsession with torturing Lily, her twisted schemes to poison the baby and drive Julian insane—it was all a grotesque sideshow. A meticulously staged domestic horror show designed to keep Julian’s eyes glued to the nursery while a multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical conspiracy matured beneath the frozen ground of his own ancestral estates.
The screen suddenly went black. A single audio file began playing through the laptop’s high-fidelity speakers.
A man’s voice, smooth, aristocratic, and completely devoid of empathy, echoed through the cavernous living room:
*"Good evening, Julian. If you are hearing this, my dear sister Victoria has undoubtedly failed her audition. No matter. She was always an hysterical creature driven by vanity. But Sarah... Sarah was our masterpiece. She didn't die for your sins, Julian. She woke up from them. Meet us at the Hudson Valley Cryogenics Facility tonight at midnight. Come alone, or we will remotely detonate the micro-capsule implanted inside your daughter’s skull during her ‘recovery’ at the Manhattan Medical Center."*
Julian stood frozen, the blood roaring in his ears.
Lily.
May you like
The red burn mark on her temple. It hadn't been an iron. It hadn't been a curling wand.
It had been an incision scar from a subcutaneous surgical implant.
