Chapter 9 - The Devil Unmasked

The silence that settled over the penthouse in the wake of the arrest was deafening.

The police officers and federal agents finished securing the scene, bagging the curling iron, the broken glass, and the phones into evidence containers. Christian Cole had already been driven away in a separate squad car, his confession signed and sealed.

Julian stood in the center of the living room, staring out into the vast, indifferent skyline of Manhattan. The rain had begun to fall, streaks of water running down the enormous glass panels like tears.

A soft sound broke the quiet.

Elena turned to see Marcus emerging from the hallway, carrying a bundle wrapped in a pale pink cashmere blanket.

Lily.

The baby was quiet now, though her breathing still hitched with the residual exhaustion of her ordeal. A small, sterile white bandage was taped neatly against her left temple where the physician had treated the minor burn.

Marcus walked over to Julian, his towering, hardened demeanor softening entirely. “She’s clean, sir. Doctor said the burn is superficial. Second-degree, but no permanent scarring if properly treated. She was just terrified.”

Julian turned around.

The cold, ruthless billionaire who had dismantled two criminals with surgical precision seemed to vanish in an instant. His shoulders slumped. His face crumbled. The heavy, dark facade cracked wide open to reveal a broken, grieving father.

Julian reached out with trembling hands. Marcus gently transferred the baby into his arms.

The moment Lily felt her father’s chest, her tiny hands reached out, clutching at the lapels of his suit jacket. She let out a tiny, fragile whimper, burying her tear-stained face into the crook of his neck.

Julian closed his eyes tightly. Hot, silent tears streamed down his face, soaking into Lily’s blanket. He wrapped his arms around her, pressing his lips against her soft hair, inhaling the innocent, powdery scent that had survived the nightmare.

“I’m sorry,” Julian whispered into her hair, his voice breaking violently. “I’m so sorry, Lily. Daddy is so sorry. I won’t ever let anyone hurt you again. Never again.”

Elena stood by the door, tears rolling down her own cheeks. She quietly gathered her purse from the entryway bench, preparing to step out of the penthouse. The ordeal was over. Justice was served. Her job was done, and she assumed the Vance family would need total privacy to heal from the wreckage.

She placed her hand on the brass handle of the front door.

“Elena.”

Julian’s voice stopped her.

Elena turned. Julian was walking toward her, holding Lily securely against his chest with one arm. The baby had fallen asleep, her tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace against her father’s heart.

Julian stopped in front of Elena. He looked at the bruises on her jaw, the cut on her cheek, the exhaustion etched into every line of her weathered face.

“Where are you going?” Julian asked softly.

“I… I should go, Mr. Vance,” Elena murmured, lowering her eyes respectfully. “It’s late, and you need to be with your daughter. You don’t need an old housekeeper hovering around.”

“You are not a housekeeper, Elena,” Julian said firmly.

Elena looked up, confused.

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of brass keys—the master keys to the Vance estate. He gently took Elena’s right hand and placed the keys into her palm, closing her fingers over them.

“When Sarah was dying,” Julian said, his voice thick with emotion, “she told me that there was only one person in this world she trusted implicitly with Lily’s soul. I thought I knew better. I thought I could manage the wolves of this city on my own. I was wrong.”

He stepped closer, bowing his head in profound, humble reverence. “You put your life between my daughter and a monster tonight. You took blows meant for her. You bled for her.”

“She’s Sarah’s daughter,” Elena whispered, her voice choking. “I would do it a thousand times.”

“I know,” Julian said. “And that is why I am asking you—not as an employer, but as a father who failed—to stay. Not to clean my floors. Not to cook my meals. I want you to be Lily’s legal guardian alongside me. I want you to raise her. To teach her what real strength is. To teach her what love looks like.”

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “Mr. Vance… I… I couldn't possibly. I am just a working woman—”

May you like

“You are the only real family Lily and I have left,” Julian interrupted gently, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in nearly a year. “Please, Elena. Come home.”
