Chapter 2 - The Mask of Perfection

The grand living room of the penthouse overlooked the glittering expanse of Central Park, but inside, the tension was suffocating enough to crack glass.
Clara paced the imported marble floor, the hem of her silk robe sweeping violently behind her. She had already wiped away her crocodile tears, replacing them with indignant, high-society outrage. “She needs to be arrested immediately, Julian! She assaulted me! Look at my wrist—it’s bruised! And God knows what she would have done to Lily if I hadn’t walked in!”
Elena stood near the towering glass windows, holding a damp paper towel against her split lip. She was trembling, not from fear of Julian, but from the adrenaline still surging through her veins.
“Mr. Vance,” Elena whispered, her voice rough. “You know me. I cared for your first wife when she was sick. I promised Sarah on her deathbed that I would protect Lily. I would die before I let a single hair on that baby’s head be harmed.”
“Shut up!” Clara snarled, turning on her like a viper. “You don’t speak my predecessor’s name in this house! You are an employee! A replaceable, low-class maid who clearly has suffered a psychotic break! Julian, call the police right now!”
Julian sat motionless on the leather sofa. He hadn't removed his suit jacket. His hands were clasped loosely between his knees, his thumbs rolling over one another in a rhythmic, mechanical cadence.
He looked at Clara. “You say Elena had the iron?”
“Yes! I heard Lily crying from the hallway,” Clara said, her voice dropping into a breathless, emotional pitch. She knelt beside Julian’s knees, resting her manicured hand on his leg, looking up at him with wide, pleading sapphire eyes. “I ran in, and she was threatening her. She was jealous, Julian. She hates that I’m your wife now. She’s obsessed with Sarah’s memory. She snapped!”
Julian looked down at Clara’s hand on his trousers. He didn’t pull away, but he didn’t lean into her touch either. “Is that so?”
“Yes! Ask security to escort her out. In fact, call Detective Hayes. I want her in handcuffs before the hour is out!” Clara urged, feeling a flicker of triumph. In her mind, she was the mistress of this empire. Julian worshipped her beauty, or so she believed. A billionaire would never take the word of an immigrant maid over his glamorous socialite wife.
Julian slowly lifted his eyes to Elena. “Elena. Did you touch my daughter with that iron?”
“No, sir,” Elena said clearly, looking straight into his eyes. “Mrs. Vance was holding it inches from her face. She was burning her hair to stop her from crying. The baby was terrified. If I hadn’t stepped in, Lily’s face would be scarred for life. Check the iron. Check the fingerprints.”
Clara gave a sharp, hysterical laugh. “Fingerprints? We both touched it during the struggle! Julian, are you seriously entertaining this ridiculous fantasy? Look at her! She’s an unhinged servant trying to save her own skin!”
Julian stood up abruptly. The sheer physical presence of the man made Clara stumble back onto the carpet. He reached into his coat pocket and retrieved his phone.
“Julian?” Clara asked, her voice faltering slightly. “Who are you calling?”
“Security,” Julian said evenly. “Elena. Pack your belongings.”
Clara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, a cruel, venomous smile twitching at the corners of her lips. She looked at Elena with pure mockery, mouthing the words: *You lose.*
Elena’s heart plunged into her stomach. A heavy, crushing weight fell over her chest. “Mr. Vance… please. Don’t leave Lily alone with her. I beg you. Fire me, arrest me, do whatever you want to me, but don’t leave that child with that monster!”
“Security will escort you to the lobby,” Julian repeated, his voice void of any emotion. “You will wait there until I come down. Do not speak another word.”
Without waiting for a response, Julian turned on his heel and walked down the long, dimly lit corridor toward his private study—the one room in the five-thousand-square-foot penthouse where no one, not even Clara, was ever permitted to enter.
Clara watched him disappear, her heart pounding with a strange, creeping unease. He hadn't hugged her. He hadn't checked on her wrist. He hadn't even checked Lily’s burns himself yet.
*He’s just in shock,* she told herself, smoothing down her silk robe with shaking hands. *He’s a man of logic. He’ll handle the maid, and then everything will go back to how it was. The child is mine to discipline. The fortune is mine to share.*

Behind her, Elena wept silently as two private building guards entered the foyer to escort her out.
