Chapter 4 - Elena’s Silent Vow

Down in the building's sterile marble lobby, Elena sat on an upholstered bench, flanked by two armed security guards who stared straight ahead, uncomfortable with their assignment.
Elena was gently pressing an ice pack, given to her by a sympathetic concierge, against her bruised temple. Her hands were still trembling. Every time she closed her eyes, she didn't see Clara’s fists or the threat of prison; she saw baby Lily’s terrified eyes, the sickening proximity of the red-hot metal to her soft skin.
*What will happen to her now?* Elena thought desperately. *Julian is blinded by that woman. He’s going to leave Lily alone with her.*
The elevator chime rang, sharp and clear.
The heavy chrome doors slid open, and Julian Vance stepped into the lobby.
Elena immediately stood up, the ice pack dropping to her lap. “Mr. Vance—”
Julian raised a single finger. The guards instantly stepped back, giving their employer absolute privacy. Julian walked toward Elena, his gait unhurried, his demeanor unreadable. He stopped two feet in front of her.
“Mr. Vance, please,” Elena pleaded, her voice cracking. “Do whatever you want with me. Fire me. Call the police. But please, take Lily to a hospital. Look at her temple. Don’t leave her in that penthouse alone tonight. I am begging you on my knees.”
Julian looked down at her. He observed the swelling on her jaw, the bloody scratch along her neck where Clara’s diamond ring had torn the skin.
“Does it hurt?” Julian asked softly.
Elena blinked, thrown off by the question. “What?”
“Your face. Your jaw. Does it hurt?”
“I don’t care about my face!” Elena’s voice rose with desperate maternal fury. “I care about Sarah’s baby! I held Sarah’s hand while she died, Mr. Vance! She begged me to protect Lily from the vipers in this city! And I failed her today because you are too blind to see the snake in your own bed!”
The lobby fell into a terrifying silence. The security guards stiffened, anticipating Julian to erupt. No one spoke to Julian Vance like that. No one.
Instead, Julian did something that made Elena’s breath catch in her throat.
The billionaire leaned down, reached out, and gently took Elena’s trembling, bruised hands into his own.
“You didn’t fail, Elena,” Julian said, his voice a low, steady rumble of lethal certainty. “You saved my daughter’s life.”
Elena gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief. “You… you believe me?”
“I watched the footage,” Julian whispered, leaning closer so only she could hear. “Every second of it. The video. The audio. Everything.”
Tears of profound relief rushed to Elena’s eyes, spilling over her bruised cheeks. “Then why did you throw me out? Why is she still up there with Lily?”
“Because,” Julian said, his eyes darkening like a stormy sea, “if I had stayed in that nursery for another ten seconds, I would have killed Clara with my bare hands in front of my daughter. And she does not get to die an easy death. She will pay for every tear Lily shed, and she will pay for Sarah.”
Elena stared at him, realizing the chilling depth of the man standing before her. Julian wasn't weak. He wasn't deceived. He was calculating an annihilation.
“What do you want me to do, sir?” Elena whispered.
Julian slipped a black keycard and a sleek encrypted smartphone into Elena’s coat pocket. “There is a private towncar waiting outside. It will take you to my secondary residence in Tribeca. A physician is already on his way there to document your injuries. We need medical records of Clara’s assault for the district attorney.”
“And Lily?” Elena asked fiercely.
“Lily is currently in the care of my personal head of security, Marcus, who went up the service elevator the moment I stepped into this lobby,” Julian replied coldly. “Clara is currently locked out of the nursery. She thinks I am down here firing you and calling my lawyers.”

Julian stood tall, adjusting his cuffs. “Clara has forty-eight hours left of freedom. And by the time I am finished, she will wish she had never been born.”
