Chapter 17 - THE MIDNIGHT RESCUE IN THE SHADOWS

The revelation hit the glass penthouse like a shockwave.

Daniel stood paralyzed, the breath violently expelled from his lungs. Every memory of his childhood—the cold distance of his supposed mother, the relentless pressure to perform, the strange lack of baby photographs, the ironclad legal trusts created before he was even ten years old—suddenly clicked into a horrifying, seamless truth.

He was never the prodigal son. He was a legal crash-test dummy designed to absorb the family’s prison sentences when the empire inevitably imploded.

Julianne laughed softly, a cruel, mocking purr. “Did you really think you had Grandfather’s jawline, Daniel? You were bought and paid for. And now, your shelf life has officially expired.”

Victoria motioned to the two armed security guards. “Take the leather tube. Destroy the blueprints. Escort Daniel and Elena to the freight elevator. Mr. Vance has already filed the mental competency paperwork. By morning, Daniel will be in a private sanitarium upstate, and Elena… well, Elena will return to obscurity. Or face criminal charges for corporate extortion.”

The two guards stepped forward, reaching for Daniel.

They never reached him.

Elena moved with the blinding speed of a woman who had nothing left to lose. Instead of stepping back, she lunged sideways, grabbing a heavy bronze sculpture from the side table and driving it straight into the reinforced glass window behind Victoria.

The heavy glass didn't shatter—it was hurricane-grade—but the deafening *CRACK* echoed like a grenade, causing both guards to instinctively flinch and draw their weapons.

In that half-second of distraction, Daniel snapped out of his shock. Thirty years of repressed athletic discipline erupted in pure adrenaline. He seized the wrist of the nearest guard, twisting it with brutal efficiency until the man’s handgun clattered to the marble floor. Daniel drove an elbow into the guard’s throat, sweeping his legs out from under him.

The second guard raised his weapon toward Daniel, but Elena lunged forward, slamming the heavy leather tube straight across the man’s temple. The guard stumbled, dazed, and Daniel tackled him hard into the grand piano, the instrument groaning in discordant agony.

“Julianne! Get the blueprints!” Victoria shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she backed away toward the private panic room.

Julianne lunged for the leather tube on the floor, but Elena stepped squarely on her wrist, pressing her heel down until Julianne screamed in agony.

“The game is over, Julianne,” Elena hissed, leaning down and ripping the security keycard from Julianne’s trench coat pocket. “Where is Naomi?”

Julianne spat at Elena’s shoes, tears of pain streaming down her mascara-stained face. “Sub-basement three… boathouse dock… you’ll never get past the harbor patrol!”

Daniel scooped up the fallen guard’s zip-ties, binding both operatives and Julianne to the heavy legs of the grand piano within sixty seconds. He turned to Victoria, who stood trembling against the reinforced door of her panic room, clutching her pearls with white-knuckled desperation.

“You aren't my mother,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. “Which means I don't owe you a single shred of mercy.”

Daniel ripped the main power breaker off the penthouse security console, plunging the entire floor into darkness save for the flashing red emergency beacons.

Grabbing the blueprints, Elena and Daniel sprinted into the private express elevator, swiping Julianne’s stolen keycard for sub-basement three.

As the elevator plummeted down seventy stories into the belly of the city, Elena checked the security card. On the back, handwritten in grease pencil, was an access code labeled: *FOUNTAIN VAULT - 1994.*

Elena’s eyes widened. “Daniel… the fountain in the courtyard. The one they threw me into. It isn't just a garden decoration.”
