Chapter 21 - FLATLINE IN THE AMBULANCE: THE SECRET HE COULD NOT SPEAK

The rain did not cleanse the water; it only stirred the crimson cloud pooling around Daniel’s chest. The courtyard had degenerated into pure, unadulterated madness. Flashbulbs from dozens of news cameras reflected off the violent ripples in the marble basin, blinding Elena as she cradled Daniel’s shuddering body. The scent of ozone, damp stone, and copper hung thick in the freezing autumn air.

“Keep your eyes on me, Daniel! Stay with me!” Elena screamed, her fingers digging frantically into his dress shirt, trying in vain to stem the pulsing torrent of blood. Her knuckles were stark white, her skin trembling from shock. The heavy fabric beneath her palms felt hot, slick, and horrifyingly saturated.

Daniel’s eyelids fluttered, pale and translucent against the harsh glare of media spotlights. His breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps, each exhale releasing a fine pink mist onto his split lips. He looked up at her, past the flashing lights, past the grand facade of Sterling Manor that had cast a suffocating shadow over both their lives. His hand lifted with agonizing slowness, his blood-soaked fingers catching the corner of her jaw, leaving a scarlet streak against her porcelain skin.

“Run... Elena...” he rasped, his voice tearing on the sharp edges of his pierced lung. “The vault... she didn't... act alone...”

“Don't you dare talk like you're leaving!” Elena choked out, tears burning behind her eyelids as sirens split the night. “You owe me a lifetime of answers, Daniel! You don't get to die here!”

Across the courtyard, Victoria Sterling was being shoved by her private security toward an armored black Maybach. The matriarch was disheveled, her immaculate chignon coming undone, but her aristocratic eyes burned with venomous triumph. Even as federal agents pushed through the wrought-iron gates, Victoria locked eyes with Elena through the blinding rain. A phantom smirk curved Victoria’s blood-red lips before she was ushered into the back of the limousine.

Suddenly, a team of paramedics swarmed the fountain. Heavy boots splashed into the water, powerful hands gently but firmly prying Elena away.

“G-S-W to the upper left quadrant! Hemothorax! Pressure is dropping through the floor—eighty over forty and falling!” a medic shouted through the downpour, ripping Daniel’s shirt open to expose the neat, catastrophic puncture wound below his collarbone. “Prep the bag! We need an intraosseous line right now!”

Elena stumbled backward, her soaked gown dragging against the wet flagstones. Naomi appeared at her side out of the darkness, lunging forward to catch Elena before her knees buckled. In Naomi’s left arm was the battered zinc box—the damning proof of thirty years of maritime fraud and cold-blooded murder.

“I have it, Elena. I have the papers,” Naomi whispered fiercely into her ear, shielding her friend from the surging throng of reporters thrusting microphones toward them. “Look at me. We have her. But we have to move!”

They loaded Daniel onto a gurney, his head lurching limply to the side. Elena broke free of Naomi’s grip and vaulted into the back of the ambulance just as the doors slammed shut, enclosing them in a claustrophobic cage of sterile fluorescent light, screaming monitors, and the frantic metallic rattle of medical gear.

The vehicle lunged forward, tires screaming across the estate's gravel drive. Inside, the pitch of the heart monitor was an erratic, frantic beat.

*Beep... Beep... Beep-beep-beep...*

“He’s slipping into V-fib!” the medic above Daniel yelled, pressing two fingers hard against his carotid artery. “Charge the pads to two hundred! Clear!”

The electrical shock lifted Daniel’s torso off the stretcher with a violent thud. His body fell back down limp.

*BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.*

A single, unbroken tone pierced Elena’s eardrums. The sound of a flatline.

“No!” Elena lunged forward, grabbing Daniel’s limp, freezing hand as the medic reached for the epinephrine. “Daniel, fight it! Fight for me!”

Outside, through the frosted glass of the ambulance window, another bolt of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating a pair of high-beam headlights following ruthlessly close behind them through the storm.
