Chapter 23 - THE WILL’S MISSING CODICIL: WHO OWNS THE STERLING EMPIRE?

The sunrise did not bring warmth; it only illuminated the gray, rain-slicked towers of the Boston financial district. By 8:00 AM, the Sterling Tower boardroom had transformed into a battlefield.

Victoria Sterling sat at the head of the sixty-foot mahogany conference table, flanked by four senior partners from the city’s most prestigious litigation firm. She had changed into a tailored charcoal skirt suit, not a single hair out of place. Her diamond ear studs caught the morning light with predatory brilliance. Opposite her sat Elena, Naomi, and Marcus Vance—the rogue former general counsel for the Sterling maritime fleet who had secretly preserved her father’s files.

Between them lay the zinc box, now marked as federal evidence, and a stack of sealed legal dossiers.

“You are trespassing on private corporate property, Miss Vance,” Victoria said, her voice smooth, dripping with disdain. “My grandson Daniel is currently incapacitated. As the designated trustee of the Sterling Family Trust, I hold ninety-eight percent of the voting shares. Whatever theatrical performance you orchestrated in the courtyard last night has no legal standing in this boardroom.”

“Daniel is not incapacitated, Victoria,” Elena replied, her voice cutting through the stuffy boardroom like a razor. “He underwent an emergency neurological evaluation this morning. His power of attorney is officially transferred to his appointed proxy.”

Elena pulled a notarized document from her leather folder and slammed it onto the glass surface. “To me.”

Victoria let out a cold, theatrical laugh that lacked any true mirth. “A proxy signed under duress by a dying boy? Any judge in this commonwealth will toss that into the incinerator before noon. You are the daughter of an embezzler, Elena. You carry the blood of a thief who drowned in Boston Harbor because he couldn't face his own debts.”

“My father didn't drown because of debts, Victoria,” Elena leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the table, staring directly into the matriarch’s glacial eyes. “Your husband, Arthur Sterling, didn't write just one will before he died thirty years ago. He knew what you did to my father’s shipping company. He knew you sank the *Northern Star* for the insurance payout and framed my family to cover your offshore accounts.”

Marcus Vance stood up, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses. He opened a velvet-lined case, revealing an aged, yellowed parchment bearing Arthur Sterling’s unmistakable cursive and a crimson wax seal.

“This is the Third Codicil to the Arthur Sterling Testamentary Trust,” Marcus announced, his voice echoing in the vast room. “Drafted, signed, and witnessed under maritime admiralty law twelve hours before Arthur Sterling’s mysterious cardiac arrest. It states explicitly: should any evidence of criminal fraud or homicide be substantiated against Victoria Sterling, the entirety of the Sterling maritime assets, the real estate portfolio, and the family seat are immediately revoked.”

Victoria’s posture remained rigid, but a microscopic twitch in her left eyelid betrayed her composure. “Arthur was senile. That codicil was revoked.”

“It wasn't revoked,” Elena countered, her heart hammering against her ribs with cold adrenaline. “Because Arthur didn't leave the assets to Daniel. He knew you would kill your own grandson to keep control. Arthur left the controlling interest to the surviving heir of the Vance maritime line.”

Elena took a step closer, pointing directly at the signature page. “He left it to my father. And through him, to me. You are sitting in my chair, Victoria. In my building. And the federal marshals are waiting downstairs with an asset freeze warrant.”

Victoria’s manicured fingers curled slowly into claws against the mahogany table. The mask of aristocratic perfection finally shattered, revealing the feral monster underneath.

“You think a piece of paper makes you a Sterling?” Victoria hissed, her voice dropping into a register of pure venom. “You have no idea what lies beneath this company. You think you’ve won? Look out that window, Elena.”
