Chapter 20 - THE SIRENS IN THE RAIN

Through the torrential curtain of rain, two blinding headlights cut across the gravel driveway. Then two more. Then a dozen.

The courtyard gate was completely blocked by a convoy of black vehicles. But these were not lawyers.

High-pitched, wailing sirens suddenly tore through the storm, their red and blue strobe lights painting the falling rain in violent shades of crimson and sapphire. State police cruisers, unmarked federal sedans, and the white satellite vans of every major news network in the tri-state area flooded onto the grounds, boxing Daniel, Elena, and Naomi into the center of the courtyard.

Doors slammed open in rapid succession. Armed tactical officers in heavy rain gear fanned out across the perimeter, assault rifles raised.

“Daniel Sterling! Elena Vance!” a voice boomed through an electronic megaphone, echoing terrifyingly over the storm. “Step away from the basin and put your hands on your heads! You are surrounded by federal marshals and local authorities!”

Elena clutched the zinc box tightly against her chest, her knuckles turning white. “Daniel… did Victoria call the police? Did she frame us for breaking into the estate?”

Before Daniel could answer, the front double doors of the dark mansion creaked open.

Stepping out onto the covered veranda was Victoria Sterling.

She had changed into a tailored black mourning dress, holding an umbrella held steady by Julian Vance. Behind them stood Julianne, her wrist wrapped in a white medical splint, a look of venomous triumph burning in her eyes.

Victoria raised her hand, signaling to the federal agents. “Officers! That is the woman who assaulted my daughter and broke into my family’s private trust vault! The man beside her is mentally unstable and under an emergency psychiatric hold! Arrest them before they destroy the historical artifacts!”

Dozens of flashbulbs went off simultaneously as the press surged against the police tape, cameras flashing through the rain, capturing Elena drenched, clutching the zinc box, standing in the very same fountain where her nightmare had begun.

“Listen to me!” Elena screamed into the blinding glare of the cameras, raising the ancient parchment high above her head into the rain. “This is the true will of William Sterling! Victoria Sterling murdered my father thirty years ago to hide her maritime fraud, and she forged the documents to disinherit her grandson!”

The reporters gasped, turning their camera lenses straight toward Victoria on the veranda. The flash of a hundred cameras lit the matriarch up like a deer caught in high beams.

Victoria’s calm mask finally cracked. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic as she saw the gold seal shining in Elena’s hand on live national television.

“Shoot her!” Victoria shrieked, losing all sanity, grabbing the arm of a nearby private security guard on the terrace. “She’s lying! Shoot the peasant!”

A deafening *BANG* cracked through the thunder.

It was not a firework. It was not the storm.

A single high-caliber gunshot tore through the courtyard.

The zinc box flew from Elena’s hands, clattering against the wet stone. Elena let out a sharp, choked gasp as a sudden, horrific weight pulled her down.

Daniel didn't shout. He didn't move.

He simply fell to his knees in the overflow of the fountain, his eyes wide, looking down in utter disbelief at his own chest. Between his fingers, dark, arterial blood began to bloom through his white shirt, spilling directly into the murky water beneath them.

“Daniel!” Elena’s scream tore through the night, a sound of absolute agony that silenced the sirens, the reporters, and the storm itself.

She caught him as he collapsed backward, falling into the icy water where she had once drowned. Daniel’s head rested in her lap, his lips trembling, his breath bubbling with crimson foam as his fingers weakly gripped her wrist.

“Elena…” Daniel whispered, his voice fading with terrifying speed into the dark.

Across the courtyard, through the smoke and the flashing blue lights, a shadowy figure on the roof of the mansion lowered a rifle with a silencer, dissolving back into the darkness.

Elena looked up into the rain, Daniel’s blood covering her hands, her dress, and the ancient stone of the fountain, as the sirens closed in.
