Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

By dawn, the Sterling Tower on 4th Street in downtown Los Angeles had become a fortress under corporate siege. The 52-story glass monolith was swarming with financial regulators, SEC auditors, and a battery of ruthless Wall Street attorneys wearing tailored charcoal suits.
Julian stepped out of the private elevator onto the executive floor, his eyes ringed with exhaustion, his jaw set like carved granite. Behind him marched a cadre of corporate litigation specialists. He had left Leo under the care of Dr. Evelyn Reed and a squad of former Israeli special forces hidden in a subterranean bunker beneath the Bel-Air compound.
"Give me the damage, now," Julian commanded, striding past his trembling executive assistants.
His chief financial officer, Arthur Vance—Clara’s estranged second cousin—stumbled into step beside him, holding a trembling tablet. "Julian, it makes no sense. An offshore shell conglomerate called *Acheron Holdings* just dumped twelve billion dollars into the open market at precisely 9:00 AM. They executed a hostile proxy squeeze against our controlling shares."
"That’s impossible," Julian snapped, kicking open the double oak doors to the boardroom. "I hold fifty-one percent of the voting equity. No outside entity can force a vote without my signature or—"
"Or Clara’s," a voice echoed from the end of the mahogany table.
Julian froze.
Sitting in the chairman's chair—the chair that had remained empty since the day Clara took her final breath—was a woman whose silhouette made Julian’s heart hammer violently against his ribs. She sat with one elegant leg crossed over the other, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water, wearing an ivory Yves Saint Laurent pant suit identical to the one Clara wore at their final shareholder gala.
When she turned her head, however, the illusion dissolved into pure malevolence.
It wasn't Clara. It was Vivienne Vance—Clara’s identical twin sister, whom the family had declared dead in a private plane crash over the Swiss Alps eight years ago.
"Hello, brother-in-law," Vivienne purred, her lips curling into a predatory smile that Clara could never have mimicked. "You look as though you've seen a ghost. Or perhaps you're just horrified that the real owner of Sterling Enterprises has finally returned to claim her inheritance."
"Vivienne," Julian hissed, the veins in his neck bulging. "You died in Geneva. I identified the dental records myself."
"You identified what my father paid your corrupt coroners to identify," Vivienne said smoothly, sliding a stack of stamped diplomatic documents across the glass table. "Clara didn't leave her twenty percent trust to you, Julian. She left it to the Vance bloodline in the event of foul play. And unlike Victoria, who was an amateur with a kitchen syringe and cheap almond extract, I hold the legal authority to seize every asset, every bank account, and every square foot of land bearing the Sterling name."

Vivienne stood up, her cold blue eyes locking onto Julian with absolute venom. "Including the custody of my dear nephew, Leo. The court filing was submitted twenty minutes ago. By sunset, Julian, you will have nothing left but your name on a criminal indictment."
