Chapter 20 - The Midnight Kidnapping and the Vanishing Heir

*CRASH!*

The four-ton steel blast door blew inward, blasted off its hinges by a high-yield breaching charge. A blinding shockwave of white smoke, flame, and pressurized gas tore through the laboratory, shattering the glass partitions and sending Vivienne flying backward against the surgical display cabinets.

Through the blazing smoke walked Julian Sterling.

His tuxedo was torn to shreds, his face streaked with soot and blood, his eyes blazing with an unholy fury. In his hands was a tactical combat shotgun. Behind him, Evelyn Reed moved with lethal grace, double-tapping two armed guards who attempted to rise from the debris.

Alistair froze, his hand still hovering an inch above Leo’s small body, the long steel needle poised to strike.

"Drop it, Alistair," Julian commanded, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that shook the foundations of the room. The shotgun barrel was aimed directly between the old patriarch's eyes. "Take one millimeter of movement toward my son, and I will erase you from existence."

Alistair chuckled, a dry, rattling sound from deep within his chest. He didn't drop the needle. Instead, he smiled—a horrific, ghastly smile of pure arrogance.

"You're too late, Julian," Alistair whispered.

"Back away from the bed!" Evelyn ordered, her rifle aimed at Alistair's heart.

"You think this laboratory is our only stronghold?" Alistair mocked, his silver eyes flashing with madness. "You think you won because you broke through a door? Look at the monitor behind you, Julian."

Julian’s eyes flicked for a fraction of a second toward the massive surveillance wall.

Every single security screen was showing a live satellite feed of an unmarked military submarine surfacing just five hundred yards off the Point Dume cliffside, its missile silos open, its boarding bridge extending toward the mansion's subterranean sea tunnel.

Suddenly, from the surgical bed where Clara lay motionless, a sharp, piercing sound broke the silence.

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!*

Clara’s heart monitor didn't flatline. It skyrocketed to two hundred beats per minute.

Her eyelids fluttered. Her hands, limp for four long years, suddenly clamped shut with inhuman force, shattering the IV drip connected to her wrist.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "Clara...?"

The woman on the bed sat up with violent, terrifying speed, ripping the mechanical ventilator tube straight from her throat. Her eyes snapped open—not the warm, loving hazel eyes Julian remembered, but cold, dilated, jet-black pupils filled with pure synthetic rage.

She didn't look at Julian. She didn't look at Alistair.

With blinding, unnatural speed, Clara reached across the surgical table, her fingers digging like steel claws into Leo’s shoulder, lifting the unconscious three-year-old boy into her arms as if he weighed nothing at all.

"Clara! No!" Julian screamed, stepping forward, his heart tearing in two. "It's me! It's Julian! That’s our son!"

Clara’s lips parted, whispering a single, distorted word in a language that was not English, a programmed trigger phrase that sent a chill through the core of Julian’s soul.

Before Julian could fire, Vivienne smashed the emergency lockdown lever beneath the console.

A three-inch thick titanium blast shutter slammed down between Julian and the surgical beds, cutting the room in half with an earth-shattering crash.

"Leo!" Julian roared, throwing his entire body against the impervious titanium wall, firing shotgun shells into the metal until the firing pin clicked empty, leaving only dents in the reinforced plate.

Through the bulletproof observation window, Julian watched in helpless, agonizing horror as Clara, holding their unconscious son tight against her chest, stepped into the hydraulic pneumatic elevator leading down to the submarine dock alongside Alistair.

Alistair turned back toward the glass, raising a satellite detonator in his left hand.

"Farewell, Julian," Alistair’s voice sounded through the external speaker. "Thank you for keeping our weapon safe for three long years."

The elevator doors sealed.

A high-pitched electronic countdown began echoing from the laboratory ceiling:

*FACILITY SELF-DESTRUCT IN T-MINUS 30 SECONDS... 29... 28...*

Beneath the glass floor, the deep hum of the submarine’s ballast tanks flooded the chamber as water began roaring into the subterranean escape tunnel. Leo was gone, taken by the ghost of his own mother—and the countdown to zero was ticking relentlessly down into total annihilation.
