Chapter 15 - The Gala of Blood and Diamonds

The revelation did not halt the Vance syndicate’s ticking clock; it accelerated it. By Friday evening, Julian had no choice but to step directly into the lion's den.

To freeze the hostile takeover of Sterling Enterprises, Julian had to attend the annual Pacific Century Charity Gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The event was packed with senators, foreign ambassadors, and global hedge-fund titans—and, most importantly, the neutral board members whose proxy votes would determine the ownership of the Sterling Empire at midnight.

The grand ballroom was a cathedral of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne pyramids, and live string quartets. Women draped in diamonds and men in bespoke tuxedos mingled effortlessly, completely unaware that a corporate war of annihilation was playing out beneath the surface.

Julian walked into the ballroom with Evelyn on his arm. She was dressed in an emerald silk backless gown that concealed two ceramic micro-blades sewn into the hem and an encrypted frequency jammer disguised as an antique brooch.

"Vivienne is at the head table," Evelyn murmured, smiling for the society photographers while her eyes scanned the balconies. "Table four. Beside her is Senator Hayes and three members of the SEC oversight committee. She’s already bought their silence."

"Let her think she has won," Julian replied through an icy smile, adjusting his cufflinks. "Marcus has the tactical sweep in place?"

"Marcus is stationed on the service floor with the local tactical unit. If anyone approaches Leo at the safe house, he’ll know."

Suddenly, the music stopped.

The lights across the grand stage dimmed, leaving only a blinding spotlight focused on the podium. A frail, aristocratic figure stepped forward, supported by an ornate silver cane topped with an obsidian wolf’s head. He had piercing silver eyes, cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass, and a presence that silenced the room in an instant.

Lord Alistair Vance.

"Distinguished guests, colleagues, and esteemed friends," Alistair’s voice resonated through the auditorium with terrifying authority. "Tonight, we do not merely celebrate charity. We celebrate the reunification of two great dynasties. For four years, my beloved daughter Clara’s legacy was mismanaged by an upstart who mistook luck for genius."

The crowd turned as one to gaze at Julian.

Alistair pointed his silver cane directly at Julian’s heart. "Julian Sterling has been served with federal indictments for corporate embezzlement, domestic endangerment, and the wrongful death of my daughter. Under California emergency estate laws, all assets of Sterling Enterprises, as well as the custody of my grandson Leo Sterling, are officially transferred to the Vance Trust."

Murmurs rippled through the room like wildfire.

Julian didn't flinch. He let go of Evelyn’s arm and took three deliberate steps toward the stage, his voice cutting through the panic with absolute clarity. "You talk of family, Alistair. But you forgot to tell the board why your signature on the transfer deed matches the signature on the Swiss bank transfer that purchased five hundred milligrams of pharmaceutical-grade bitter almond cyanide three weeks before Leo's birthday."

Alistair’s eyes narrowed into slits.

Before anyone could react, the enormous crystal chandelier directly above Julian’s head creaked with a sickening groan of snapping steel cables.

"Julian, look out!" Evelyn screamed, throwing her body into his with crushing force.

The four-ton chandelier collapsed, smashing into the marble floor in an explosion of shattered crystal, twisted brass, and flying shrapnel. Screams tore through the ballroom as the room plunged into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the muzzle flashes of silenced automatic pistols.
