Chapter 16 - Whispers from the Grave

The darkness did not last. Emergency red beacon lights flickered to life along the ballroom perimeter, casting a blood-red haze over the screaming crowd of high-society elites scrambling for the exits.

Julian scrambled to his feet, pulling Evelyn up from the glass-strewn floor. Shards of crystal had sliced through his tuxedo sleeve, drawing a crimson trail down his forearm, but the adrenaline surging through his veins rendered him entirely numb to the pain.

Across the smoke-filled room, two men in black tactical gear advanced with suppressed submachine guns, their laser sights tracing red dots across the marble floor toward Julian’s chest.

"Move!" Evelyn barked.

She whipped out the ceramic blade hidden in her gown, spun behind the nearest decorative pillar, and intercepted the lead gunman as he rounded the corner. With lethal military precision, she deflected his weapon upward, driving the ceramic blade cleanly through the gap in his tactical vest beneath his collarbone. The man collapsed with a muffled gasp.

Julian snatched the fallen operative's dropped weapon, turned, and fired a controlled burst into the second gunman’s chest, dropping him instantly onto the ruins of the shattered champagne pyramid.

"Alistair is gone!" Julian shouted over the blaring evacuation sirens, scanning the empty stage.

"He was never going to stay for the execution," Evelyn said, checking the dead operative’s pocket. She pulled out a military-grade satellite comms unit that was still flashing an active data link. "Julian... look at the frequency ping."

The coordinates on the screen were not pointing to an escape helicopter or a private airstrip.

They were pointing to *Oakridge Memorial Cemetery*—the private mausoleum where Clara had been laid to rest.

Ten minutes later, the Maybach tore through the wrought-iron gates of the cemetery on the outskirts of Pasadena. The fog hung heavy between the marble headstones, thick as cotton wool, choking out the moonlight.

Julian stepped out of the vehicle, weapon in hand, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The heavy bronze doors of the Sterling family mausoleum had been pried open with industrial crowbars. Inside, a single halogen work light cast long, skeletal shadows across the white marble floor.

Julian stepped inside. The air was frigid, reeking of damp earth, ozone, and fresh concrete dust.

Clara’s elevated marble sarcophagus had been unsealed. The heavy stone lid lay broken on the floor.

Julian approached slowly, dread freezing the breath in his throat. He peered over the edge into the velvet-lined coffin, expecting to see the desecrated remains of his late wife.

The coffin was empty.

There was no body. There were no skeletal remains. There was only a life-sized medical dummy filled with lead ballast, dressed in Clara’s burial gown.

Lying on the silk pillow where Clara’s head should have rested was a digital tablet. As Julian drew closer, the screen flared to life, playing a freshly recorded video from an undisclosed medical facility.

On the screen was Clara.

She was pale, hooked to a mechanical ventilator in a sterile white room, her chest rising and falling with slow, artificial rhythm. Sitting beside her bed, holding her limp hand, was Lord Alistair Vance.

"She never died, Julian," Alistair’s voice whispered from the tablet's speakers, cold and triumphant. "I put her into a medically induced coma four years ago to keep her from confessing her crimes. But her brain activity is fading. To wake her... we need a compatible bone marrow and neural stem-cell transplant. And there is only one donor on this entire planet whose genetic markers are a hundred percent match."

Alistair leaned into the camera, his silver eyes burning with demonic hunger.

"Leo."
