Chapter 11 - The Echo in the Floorboards

The quiet peace of Celia’s orchard house had felt like an answered prayer, but for Emma, the illusion of total safety shattered at precisely two o’clock in the morning.

The farmhouse had settled into that deep, breathless silence common to rural nights, where the only cadence was the wind slipping through the blooming apple boughs and the soft, rhythmic puff of baby Hope’s breath from the crib beside the bed. Emma lay awake, staring at the ceiling where moonlight sketched pale, trembling branches through the windowpane. Beside her, Ryan slept with one arm curled protectively over the mattress toward their daughter. Even in slumber, his body bore the lingering tension of a man who had spent months trapped behind double-bolted drywall. His knuckles were permanently scarred from hammering against soundproof panels.

Then it came.

Not a creak of wood contracting in the chill. Not the scurrying of field mice beneath the joists.

It was three distinct, deliberate knocks.

*Tap. Tap. Tap.*

Emma bolted upright, her breath seizing in her throat. The sound had not come from the porch door or the window. It had vibrated upward through the floorboards directly beneath the crib.

Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She looked down at Ryan. His eyes snapped open instantly—jail-cell reflexes die hard. He was alert in a fraction of a second, sitting up, hand reaching instinctively to shield Emma.

"Did you hear that?" Emma whispered, her voice barely more than air.

Ryan didn't answer right away. He lowered his feet to the bare oak planks, his jaw clenched tight. He leaned down, pressing his ear against the cold wood.

Two seconds passed. Then two slower, hollow vibrations responded: *Thud... Thud.*

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. It was their code. The exact three-and-two cadence Ryan had used to signal through the false gallery wall in the Crown Room before his rescue. But Ryan was sitting right here beside her.

"Who is down there?" Emma breathed, terror turning her blood to ice. "Celia told us the cellar was sealed fifty years ago after the old root cellar caved in."

"Stay here with Hope," Ryan whispered, slipping silently off the bed. He grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the nightstand, his eyes dark with a protective fury. "Lock the bedroom door behind me."

"Ryan, no! We don't know who—"

"I was locked in the dark for eight months, Emma," he said, turning back to look at her, the moonlight cutting across his lean, hardened jaw. "I will never let someone creep beneath the floorboards where my daughter sleeps. Keep your phone in your hand. If I yell, you run out the porch door with Claire and Nora."

He slipped out into the hall before she could argue. Emma crept to the nursery doorway, holding her breath, listening to the creak of Ryan’s footsteps descending toward the farmhouse pantry, where the heavy padlocked trapdoor to the sealed foundation lay hidden beneath a woven rag rug.

In the silence, another muffled series of taps echoed—not three, but four. A frantic scramble. Then the sharp, unmistakable sound of shattering glass beneath the earth.
