Chapter 19 - The Master’s Return

The distant wail of sirens began to bleed into the night air—not the solitary siren of a local deputy, but a multi-agency chorus echoing along the river valley road, rapidly climbing the winding approach to the Montgomery orchard.
"Sir," one of the armed guards muttered, his nerve breaking as he backed toward the idling SUV. "We have to move now. State troopers are crossing the county bridge."
Marcus Vance looked at Emma, his expression a grotesque mask of aristocratic hatred. "You think you've won something, girl? You think this gallery, this fortune, belongs to you?"
"It never belonged to you," Emma answered, holding Hope closer to her chest. "You stole my mother's life, you locked my husband in a cage, and you treated human beings like canvas you could paint over and discard. But the truth doesn't wash out."
Marcus sneered, taking two slow steps backward down the porch stairs. "Helena thinks she knows everything about the vaults. She knows nothing. The paintings... the money... they were only the surface. What’s locked in Vault 004 will dismantle every institution this state relies upon. And you hold the only key, Emma."
"Stop him!" Ryan lunged down the steps, but Marcus's bodyguard raised a high-intensity flash-grenade and slammed it against the porch stone.
A deafening *BANG* and an explosion of blinding white phosphorus tore through the yard.
Ryan was thrown backward onto the wood, Emma shielding Hope with her entire body as the shockwave rattled the windows. When the smoke cleared five seconds later, the lead SUV was already tearing across the wet grass, tires screaming as it smashed through the orchard fence and vanished into the darkness of the gorge road.

Behind them, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the crest of the hill as a convoy of state police cruisers swarmed the driveway.
