Chapter 16 - The Silent Guardian

"Marcus is alive?" Nora choked, backing into the pantry door frame. "His funeral was broadcast nationwide! The Vance Museum of Modern Art was dedicated in his memory!"
"He faked his death when the federal fraud commission opened the sealed vaults in Switzerland," Celia whispered, her face pale as parchment. "He sacrificed his daughter Helena to take the public fall while he operated from the shadows through foreign offshore trusts. He’s the one who locked you away, Ryan. Helena was merely his warden."
"Celia!" Marcus’s voice rang out again, striking the door with his silver cane. "Don't force my men to ignite the orchard. You know how quickly old wood burns."
Ryan stepped toward the door, but Emma grabbed his sleeve. "Ryan, no. You can't fight armed men."
"I'm not fighting them blindly," Ryan said grimly. He turned to Claire. "Do you still have the live streaming setup you used during the trial? The one routed to Nora’s legal network servers?"
Claire’s eyes lit with sudden, vicious intelligence. "The uplink hotspot in my backpack. It bypasses cellular jamming because it's tied to the county emergency frequency."
"Turn it on," Ryan commanded. "Marcus thinks he's operating in the dark. Let's see how much he likes the spotlight he put on Emma."
Emma looked down at Hope, then at the birth certificate on the table. A surge of fierce, maternal courage washed away the paralyzing terror. For months, she had been the victim—painted, mocked, chased, and made to feel like an intruder in her own life.
"No," Emma said, stepping past Ryan. "Don't hide inside. We open the door."
"Emma, are you insane?" Claire gasped.
"He wants the certificate and the key," Emma said, picking up the heavy brass key *004*. "He wants to keep his ghost status. The moment he steps in front of Claire's camera with that key in sight, he destroys his own grave."

With a steady hand, Emma walked into the front hallway, flicked the deadbolt, and pulled the heavy door open.
