Chapter 20 - The Unopened Will

Dawn broke over the Montgomery orchard in hues of cold lavender and pale rose.

The farmhouse was surrounded by yellow crime scene tape, forensic vans, and state investigators documenting the collapsed tunnel beneath the pantry. Nora was in the kitchen speaking heatedly with federal marshals, while Claire was fielding nonstop media inquiries from every major network in the country.

Emma sat on the porch swing, wrapped in a blanket, watching the sun crest the apple trees. Ryan sat beside her, his fingers entwined with hers, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand. Baby Hope was asleep in her carrier between them, untroubled by the storm that had raged around her.

Celia walked out, holding a thermos of coffee and a small, heavy steel lockbox retrieved from the subterranean safe Helena's dying courier had protected with his life.

"The federal team verified the seal," Celia said quietly, sitting across from them. "It's the personal archive of Marcus Vance. Untouched for thirty years."

Emma looked at the heavy brass key *004* resting on her lap. Her hands trembled slightly as she reached out and inserted it into the keyhole of the steel box.

*Click.*

The lock turned with a smooth, heavy resistance.

Ryan leaned forward, his jaw tight, watching as Emma lifted the steel lid.

Inside lay no cash, no bearer bonds, and no deeds.

There was only a single, aged oil painting, unstretched and rolled tightly, alongside an envelope marked with the private crest of the state supreme court.

Emma carefully unrolled the canvas.

It was a portrait—masterfully executed, the brushstrokes rich with genius and madness. It depicted a young woman standing in the Crown Room, wearing an identical dress to the one Emma had worn on the night of the gala. But across the woman's throat was painted a single crimson slash, and beneath her feet lay an open, empty cradle.

Pinned to the back of the canvas was a handwritten letter in dried black ink, dated only three weeks ago:

*"To my dearest granddaughter Emma:*

*If you are reading this, Helena has failed and I am already gone. But do not look for me in the prisons or among the dead. The vault you unlocked does not lead to an inheritance. It leads to the nursery beneath the gallery—where your real twin sister has been waiting for twenty-six years.*

*Listen for the three knocks.*

*She is still inside."*

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat as the paper slipped from her numb fingers.

Beneath them, deep in the silent earth below the porch, three faint, deliberate knocks echoed once more.
