Chapter 12 - A Midnight Delivery

Claire was already awake when Ryan reached the kitchen. The younger sister had always possessed the nervous instincts of a stray cat, sharpened to a razor edge by the public trial and the ruthless smear campaigns launched by the Vance family syndicate. She stood near the sink in an oversized sweater, clutching a kitchen knife, her eyes wide in the gloom.
"Ryan," Claire hissed, pointing toward the floor. "Something’s moving under the pantry."
"Wake Nora and Celia," Ryan commanded under his breath. "Get them toward the front hall."
"Not without you," Claire insisted fiercely. "Whatever Helena Vance built, she didn't build alone. What if her legal defense team sent people to bury evidence?"
Before Ryan could answer, the heavy oak trapdoor in the corner of the pantry shuddered. Dust puffed up between the antique seams. The iron padlock holding the hasp looked rusted shut, but the iron hinges groaned under an upward heave.
Ryan lunged forward, raising the heavy candlestick, ready to strike down whatever emerged. "Step back, Claire!"
With a brutal wrench, the wood splintered. But a human figure didn't crawl out.
Instead, a thin, bloodied arm shoved through the gap between the broken planks. The fingers were caked in mud, coal dust, and dried grease. Clutched tightly in the hand was not a weapon, but a water-damaged courier pouch wrapped in black industrial plastic and secured with yellow caution tape bearing the emblem of the state archives.
The arm convulsed, thrusting the pouch onto the linoleum, followed by a wheezing, raspy voice from the darkness below:
"Take it... before they burn the warehouse... she's not who she claims..."
Ryan dropped to his knees, shoving the broken trapdoor wider with his shoulder, ignoring the danger. "Who are you? Give me your hand!"
"No time," the voice choked, wet with blood and exhaustion. "Helena was just the buyer. The man who ordered your cage... he’s already inside the estate trustees... look at the signature on the deed..."
A violent crash echoed deep inside the subterranean tunnel, followed by the dull, muffled thump of a silenced gunshot.
Ryan reached down into the black opening, his fingers brushing against cold fabric, but a heavy weight collapsed beneath. The sound of shifting dirt and crumbling stone roared through the crawlspace as an ancient support beam gave way, bringing down a cascade of clay, slate, and rotten timber.
"Ryan! Pull back!" Claire screamed, grabbing his collar and hauling him backward just as the pantry floor caved inward by three feet, choking the passage in a dense plume of suffocating dust.

When the air cleared, the tunnel was completely entombed in rubble. On the kitchen floor, sitting innocent and damp under the moonlit shadows, lay the sealed black courier pouch.
